I didn't realize how bad some of my favorite book series had become until I enjoyed this story. Took me a few books in to understand why. Turns out I was basically reading a rationality book again. Looks like I'm spending all my yearly credits on this author. If you like rationality adventure books,I recommend Eliezer Yudkowsky's Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I had someone (yeah, I know you'll read this) tell me that I had similarities to the main character. I now understand why. Trauma, attrition, combat/war and the choices between power or strength and what you do with it have similar effects on everybody they touch. 10/10 would spend a year's worth of sub on this series again.

Ending alone made it go from 3 to 4 stars. But it did earn that star.

Let's be honest, expectations of free harem fantasy books on audible is typical between bad and very bad. But you give it a nice 3 or in that rare case 4 stars because you picked the poison and judge it against it's own category. This book isn't like that. This has comprehensive magical theory in it... Powerlessness expressed rather then told in doubt and fear, a minor mystery for flavor, seduction that borders on romantic with a more raw primitive expressed love, all the while wondering if our Djinn is a really a demon, (a time-bomb dark Djinn) or just using this human until she can dispose of him. I don't know if the other books in this series will be as good as this one, but I'm sold enough on this to read all 8 other free books by Mark Albany on audible.

The sample of quantum computing D&D sounds great, but the rest of the book isn't half as smart. That's the end of the good ideas in this one. It's all emotional pride and guilt after that. You get one star for the betrayal.

Smooth plot. Balanced combat. Basic magic system. Maybe a little lacking on why main character is personally afraid of all old government making new governments instead of trying to join one.

I will never buy a E. Moon book again! High Fantasy lite novel my backside! I want to throw my phone out the window. This book has no monsters, no magic & no adventure other than a passing mentioning. A book needs to open on the author's best foot. When E. Moon decided to wright her high fantasy magnum opus, she decided her best go-to was an attempted gang rape in a military setting with a near death beating, an investigation, a military trial & marching in mud for ten chapters. And that is just the beginning of this self endulgence that reeks more of a watered down personal or political agenda than of an effort of entertainment. As far as I can tell, the morale of this story is "Adventure is Boaring". I would demand a refund, but I got this on sale for 1/4 a credit. I need audio-fire to burn this audiobook.

A new main lead with new objectives. This isn't some kid's ambition betting it all. This is a smart old man with nothing to lose. Mr. Bagwell hasn't let me down yet. Buying the sequal.
