I should have returned this title after the third chapter. There is no likable character. The random gratuitous sex scenes sound like a teenager trying to write porn. It’s just bad all around. Colleen Hoover is so hit or miss. This was a huge miss.

This is probably the best book I have read all year. While suspense novels tend to be a bit predictable This one completely wowed me. The narration was great, but the story was even better!

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I almost put this down as I couldn’t figure out how these characters were intertwined and a talking octopus seemed a little far-fetched. Once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down a heartwarming story with a cast of very likable characters.

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

Ultra feminine main male character
Reviewed: 06-24-24
This was a free listen so I usually am just thankful for the entertainment, but the main character was sooo feminine. From the way the performer voiced him, to his blue hair and how he was too “unsure” of what ring to buy that his love interest bought her own. Not to mention his weird momma’s boy relationship with his mother. No woman would want to date this man.

Story
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Most annoying main character ever.
Reviewed: 06-20-24
I really wanted to like this book. It seemed like it would be something light and easy for the summer. However, the main character is such a victim in her own mind. Yes she had an absentee mother, but she is a successful traveling nurse who is beautiful has a great best friend and an extremely patient and caring man who loves her. The people in her life constantly have to coddle her and worry about her always “getting small” (whatever that means). She was exhausting.

Story
When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

Easy fun read
Reviewed: 06-07-24
This was a very easy read..perfect for the beach. The only thing that was slightly annoying was how the main character, Marilyn, portrayed herself as such a victim. Obviously it was a different time, but she was a very privileged young woman, and she seemed to whine an awful lot. She was 20 years old, not a child, so having to “listen to daddy” just fell flat.

Story
The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

This was an exceptional book extremely well written, and the performance was excellent. I feel like this should be mandatory reading in history classes everywhere. While it is fiction, it is extremely historically accurate and shows just how quickly humanity can take a turn for the worst.

Great story bad performance

This was a really good story and at times very heart wrenching. But one thing that I could not get past was how utterly annoying and whiny the two children in this novel were. They were written like spoiled brats, but the performer who read the story emphasized that so much that it was almost impossible to listen to them as they cried and whined and complained over and over and over again. Although with that said, the main character was so likable that it made me want to power through the unlikable characters.
