Story
Thirty years ago, a young woman was murdered, a family was lynched, and New Orleans saw the greatest magical massacre in its history. In the days that followed, a throne was stolen from a queen. On the anniversary of these brutal events, Clement and Cristina Trudeau—the sixteen-year-old twin heirs to the powerful, magical, dethroned family—are mourning their father and caring for their sick mother. Until, by chance, they discover their mother isn’t sick—she’s cursed. Cursed by someone on the very magic council their family used to rule. Someone who will come for them next.

Nests is a malignant sociapath who never shows any redeemable qualities. I also just have to note the addition of a powerful, smart Black woman character who Nesta gets to "outsmart", humiliate and flex her power on. In a book where all the main characters are white or mixed that was such an intentional and weird choice

So..
we get all the way to book 2 and here comes the anti-Blackness. The first and only Black character was introduced and the narrator hits the racism button hard and gives the character the ONLY accent in the book and it is...badddddd. I tried to blame the horrible portrayal on the narrator but then the author makes this Black male character arrogant, ignorant, violent and even decides he would hit the girl he claims to like. I wish I could return it. It's not fun to get to the SECOND book in a series and see how poorly the author views people who look like you
