Story
Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

I had doubts but I didn't want it to end

This is my new favorite book. Of course it's ego-centric (it's an autobiography) but the author is incredibly self seeking, and his writing is world class. If I would have read this when it debuted 7 years ago I would have quit my job, thrown my board in a bag, filled a backpack with James Joyce, and disappeared for a decade.

Story
They say that history is written by the victors. But not in the case of the most famous dissenter on the Supreme Court. Almost a century after his death, John Marshall Harlan’s words helped end segregation and gave us our civil rights and our modern economic freedom. But his legacy would not have been possible without the courage of Robert Harlan, a slave who John’s father raised like a son in the same household.

This book to my surprises take the form of a dual biography between John Marshal Harlen and his half-brother Robert who was born into slavery. It traces the political, legal, and racial history from the civil war through reconstruction, using the stories of these two impressive men and their families.
Incredibly gripping, detailed, and emotional. Masterfully dives into the history behind each of JMH's dissents and how he changed the legal landscape decades later. It is also an excellent history of post-reconstruction America. I am a big fan of legal and political history and I absolutely loved this biography.

Story
With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail.

mediocre narration. not some bias account like other reviews suggest. It's a good military history of the Indian wars.
