Story
To serial slayer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from prison, Compton makes his way to the United States with the sole ambition of bringing his “art” to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, and drawn to possess and destroy young boys, Compton inadvertently joins forces with Jay Byrne, a dissolute playboy who has pushed his “art” to limits even Compton hadn’t previously imagined.

This book is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re OK with Gore, rape, discussion of HIV and aids, murder. It’s phenomenal. This book talks about serial killers, and how HIV/aids decimated the gay population. I think this is a fascinating novel, and truly was an enjoyable experience for me. I enjoy body horror though, and if you are a faint of heart, this book is absolutely not for you.

Story
Suffer the Children presents a terrifying tale of apocalyptic fiction, as listeners are introduced to Herod's Syndrome, a devastating illness that suddenly and swiftly kills all young children across the globe. Soon, they return from the grave, and ask for blood. And with blood, they stop being dead. They continue to remain the children they once were, but only for a short time, as they need more blood to live. The average human body holds 10 pints of blood, so the inevitable question for parents everywhere becomes: How far would you go to bring your child back?

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I liked the twist on “the end of the world” in a way that I personally have never seen before. Making it children, centric, and focusing on what parents would do was a really interesting twist that I personally enjoyed this book made me feel uneasy, and had me at the edge of my seat, the entire time.

Story
Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying collection of essays that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives. His is a meditation on delight that takes a clear-eyed view of the complexities, even the terrors, in his life, including living in America as a Black man; the ecological and psychic violence of our consumer culture; the loss of those he loves.

Story
Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alone—for how many hours?—in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll.

Accidentally watched the Netflix movie. Read the book first.
Reviewed: 02-25-23
So I didn’t realize this book inspired “things seen and not heard” on Netflix. I watched that and like 5 hours into this book I was like.. I know this story. It’s so good though I didn’t mind. The book is so much better than the movie though. The ending is better, the characters are better. Just so good. The movie is more paranormal, but the book is just wonderful. Gripping, suspenseful, an absolute “page turner”. This will have you feeling so many feelings.

Story
I ran from him, even though my heart knew better. Love was one thing, but survival another. I should have known he'd come for me. Men like him always get what they want. The temptation in his eyes, the heat of his touch...it's all still there, but his gaze is harsher now and his grasp unrelenting. He's not the boy I fell in love with, although pieces of what we once had are still there. I can feel it. I know what he wants from me, and I know it comes with a steep price. I'll pay it though, if for no other reason than to touch him again.

Story
At 74, Yalom has penned a book that is the climax of his lifework, focusing on the universal human issues of mortality and death. He suggests that what he calls the "awakening experience" can help us acknowledge, accept, and utilize our fear of death in a very positive manner. Such an awakening experience can be as simple as a dream, or quick as a sudden insight. It is often a loss, a trauma, or just plain aging that can prompt an awakening experience that is a turning point for a more meaningful life.

Wow, what a book. I found Dr. Yalom through the book he wrote with his wife as she was passing. Intrigued by his intellect and viewpoint I sought out more of his books. I cannot recommend this book enough. I minor in psychology, so I have a bit of reference for some of the things he discusses, but he does such a good job of making this book accessible for all education levels. You do not require a PhD in psychology to understand where he’s coming from, and to take the points that he makes and combine them with your daily viewpoint. I will say, this book is challenging. It brooches topics that aren’t often discussed. But in discussing them, you can begin to think through them, and fear them less.

The story will break you in ways you don’t realize that you can be broken. Facing death full on the face, holding hands with the person you love. It is hard, but it is important. I cannot recommend this book, this look into Marilyn and Irvins lives enough. I feel blessed and honored to have had the story, this intimate and heartbreaking story. Shared with us.

I needed this book, on day two of listening to this person Russia invaded Ukraine. Knowing that after work, after I’ve had been bombarded with news, I was feeling overwhelmed. Having this book to ground me, denounce violence, and uplift others served as a necessary anchor through these times. The book is quick, but impactful. So I can’t apply all of these to my life, I have found a new way of thinking and being that I hope it’s shaping me to be a better, more peaceful person.

Story
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....
