Lies from the Past~ Good story~ holds the interest
Reviewed: 04-23-19
Two stories blend ~
Vickie gets hired on as a camp cook on the Wilder Ranch. Her past with Boss Sloan Wilder over 40 years ago brings back anger and hurt over a lie that broke them apart. Now Vickie has the chance to make it right.
Wyatt the handsome foreman of the Wilder Ranch has a bad start with Deputy Erin. She finds out he is hearing impaired and has to apologize for the ticket she issued him based on her bad first impression. Erin is the niece of Sloan this gives way for one very entertaining story. Add a Pet Bear who has an addiction; to Ketsup and we are hooked. Catherine Anderson is one of the best at making interesting characters have depth and come to life. Kate Turnbull is excellent as she reads this story. I give it overall 4 stars~

Story
The spy novel emerged from the intrigues of the mid-20th century for good reason. The war with the Third Reich involved an unseen cloak-and-dagger struggle between the participants, but beyond that, an even larger and longer contest took place in the shadows. The men responsible for this unprecedented leaking of life-or-death information would enter history as the Cambridge Five - though in fact, they may have been only the core of a much larger group.

Short on Content~ Spies for Russia 3 stars~
Reviewed: 08-14-18
A brief glimpse into the Cambridge Spies.
This is a very short book. About 90 minutes. It is very short on details and is best described as an overview. The Russian (USSR) recruits each man who in turn help recruit other spies. They devote their time passing secrets to the Russian KGB. Over time intercepted radio messages are finally decoded called Venona by the US. When a clue to McClain's spying is found. McClain is headed to a complete mental breakdown. So fellow spy Burgess receives an order to *flea" to the USSR with McClain. Left behind is Philby who is soon a major suspect. It takes years for Philby to finally be nailed down as a spy and he leaves and is soon living in the USSR as an honored guest because of his spy history. This fills in the missing pieces how the British class system aided the good old boy network to make the spies above suspicion I would give it over all 5 stars.

Story
In his best-selling autobiography, Albert Speer, Minister of Armaments and chief architect of Nazi Germany, repeatedly insisted he knew nothing of the genocidal crimes of Hitler's Third Reich. In this revealing new biography, author Martin Kitchen disputes Speer's lifelong assertions of ignorance and innocence, portraying a far darker figure who was deeply implicated in the appalling crimes committed by the regime he served so well. Kitchen reconstructs Speer's life with what we now know, including information from valuable new sources that have come to light only in recent years.

The REAL Speer~ 3 stars over all~ way to long~
Reviewed: 07-28-18
Plot: the detailed factual account of Albert Speer and job as Prime Minister of Armorments during WW2.
This is not a bio. This shows facts and figures of the German Armorments and manufacturing under The Todt Organization under Speer during WW2. It gives very little about his personal life. We lose interest in the overly "detailed" facts and figures of how he maintained Weapon production during the War. Why Bother? It does give a close up look at how Speer manipulated his role is the actual events that eventually prevent him from a death sentence and successfully help him with a 20-year prison sentence. And does for the first time show how aware he really was and his involvement in the slave labor of prisoners. And how he was able to keep the war production going in spite of bombing and decreased the availability of metals and oil to keep Germany able to make war. I give the reader 4 stars and the overly long detailed plot 3 stars.

Close Up Look at the Princess of Wales ~4 stars~

Plot: Bio based on the "secret" tapes Diana smuggled to Andrew Morton.
This is in several parts. Part one is based on the actual tapes of Princess Diana ...tapes smuggled out of Kensington Palace but it is *narration* of the tapes. Still fascinating. Part two is Morton writing with interviews and collected info. Part 3 is her death and the aftermath. This is a very good look at the life of Princess Diana. She was a lonely insecure woman who married a man she loved but proved his own wishes would always come first. The "third"person according to Diana was Camilla and the other woman made it impossible to work on a damaged relationship. I liked this book but a little shorter version would have been perfect.

Plot: outlook at the secrets and gizmos that spies use.
This is a very good book. We learn a close up look at the gadgets of the spies and how they were used and improved over time. How spy technology has changed since the advent of the computer and internet. This is a very good look at the way the CIA and other agencies spy on each other. Added to the details in the stories of spies are detected and how they evade being caught. I would have loved this if it were a bit shorter. 5 star over all.

Plot: a young married couple dedicate their life to hunting down Nazi and bring them to justice.
Serge Klarsfeld is Jewish and lost most of his family to the Nazi Death Camps. As he marrieds German born Beate Klarsfeld they find that many Nazis are living openly in Post War Germany. Others are in France or even South American countries and have not been punished for the crimes of World 2. They track several ex Nazis. One was listed in the phone book. They methodically document their case to attempt to bring justice in the form of public attention. Beate even slaps a Nazi Sympathizer who is a pubic official. The slap gets plenty of notoriety The "good old boy" comrades aka ex Nazis are alive and in positions of power in many countries which can help to hide other fugitives The Klarsfelds give us the outline of their life of helping many Nazis not only get arrested but help bring them to justice. The sacrifice is amazing . I would have liked this audio book to be a few hours less. At times is overly detailed, but still interesting how this couple were able to pull off the amazing ability to find justice let alone the danger they lived with. I give it 4 Stars. The reader(S) were both excellent with many dialects and very to help make the story come more alive.
