About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author Thomas Perry, "who can be depended upon to deliver high-voltage shocks" (Stephen King), comes a new thriller about an unlikely burglar - a young woman in her 20s - who realizes she must solve a string of murders or else become the next victim.

Elle Stowell is a young woman with an unconventional profession: burglary. But Elle is no petty thief - with just the right combination of smarts, looks, and skills, she can easily stroll through ritzy Bel Air neighborhoods and pick out the perfect home for plucking the most valuable items. This is how Elle has always gotten by - she is good at it, and she thrives on the thrill. But after stumbling upon a grisly triple homicide while stealing from the home of a wealthy art dealer, Elle discovers she is no longer the only one sneaking around. Somebody is searching for her.

As Elle realizes her knowledge of the high-profile murder has made her a target, she races to solve the case before becoming the next casualty, using her breaking-and-entering skills to uncover the truth about exactly who the victims were and why someone might have wanted them dead.

With high-stakes action and shocking revelations, The Burglar will keep listeners on the edge of their seats as they barrel toward the heart-racing conclusion.

Love this author

I recently discovered Thomas Perry with The Old Man. I absolutely loved that story. I enjoyed this one also, and wish it wasn't over. With all 3 of his recent books, I find myself wanting to follow the main characters into their next life chapters. They are very good, intriguing stories that compel the reader forward. They are not predictable and do not follow a formula. I like that. I think you'll enjoy getting to know Elle.

More than excellent

Thomas Perry never disappoints me and this is no exception. I'm not sure how he can make Elle so appealing and intriguing, but this is the first time I have been rooting for a burgler. Elle is smart like all of Mr. Perry's heroines/heros (or anti-heros?). The reader does an excellent job capturing Elle's personna and voice. As always, Perry has the perfect ending. I am sorry that this ended.

Disappointing—Not Up to Perry’s Usual

Interesting concept—young female cat burglar accidentally caught in a triple homicide/art fraud/paramilitary conspiracy type thing—yeah, not so interesting.

I liked the main character and found the intricacies of burglary intriguing. Everything else was just too unrealistic and kept kicking me out of the story. Good narration!

A burglary procedural

I am a big Thomas Perry fan, beginning with “The Butcher’s Boy.” His novels are all procedural — hitman, life on the run or on the dl, finding someone. This is a burglary procedural, and, as with al Perry’s novels, is informative and highly detailed. The weakness in this book is not the plot exactly, it’s the implausible underlying premise. Nevertheless, the book is very well narrated by Christina Delaine, and recommended, as well as a must for Perry fans.

Good story good details

I enjoyed this book the narration was interesting and the woman’s voice was deep and kind of laconic not given to sounding excited it was nice. Also a point of personal privilege: the author knows guns, he knows the different kinds calibers models and operating systems. I mention this because it is so irritating to read a nice mystery and then have the author say something like “ He then clicked off the safety on his Glock.” If you know something about guns and Glocks in particular no need to say anymore. It is hard to suspend disbelief when the author makes a glaring mistake.
In this book the descriptions of the burglaries were detailed and interesting and fun to read. Highly recommend it.

Great read!

This is my fourth Perry and I've enjoyed three of the four a lot. ("The Butcher's Boy".and "The Old Man" were gripping. "Forty Thieves," about a husband and wife P.I. team didn't send me. This one did.) Elle is a thief who stumbles on the scene of a triple murder. At one point she is followed leaving the scene. She goes to a friend's to lay low and when she returns finds her friend murdered. Elle is no detective but she is very smart and an incredibly skilled break-in artist, and the police seem to make no headway on either case, so she decides to collect the evidence needed to bring the killers to justice. All the while she is breaking into places where she might find evidence, you realize she is being hunted. You root for her 110%.
I like the narrator's voice and performance a lot. My one small complaint is, depending on the character speaking, she may drop her voice, and I hate going back to catch the words. It took four tries for me to hear the final two words -- I play the recordings softly because I listen every night while drifting off to sleep.
