No. He didn’t choose life at all. Shot dead in a gunfight many years ago, now he’s stuck in purgatory, serving the whims of the White Throne to avoid falling to Hell. The Downs, the poor district of the city of Avarest, is home to cutthroats and thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes, all of whom pay tribute to one of two powerful crime bosses. It is also home to Aaron Envelar, a disillusioned sellsword known as the Silent Blade, who cares nothing for the criminal overlords or their schemes, who only wants to survive and make a little coin. But when a group of thugs steal his mother’s necklace, the only link he has to his murdered parents, Aaron decides that sometimes gold isn’t enough - sometimes, blood is the only payment worth taking.

Wow, I LOVED IT
Reviewed: 09-27-22
I downloaded this book because there was a review that called this series "Medieval John Wick" and with that alone I was interested. The narrator, Steven Brand is amazing. I first heard him on "The Pariah" (which was a great book by the way) and I enjoyed him then and I really enjoyed him here. This is my second gritty fantasy audiobook and I have to say I really am loving these type of stories. I personally enjoy Game of Thrones type of fantasy as well as Lord of the Rings.
The character Aaron Envelar was my type of protagonist from the start. I am going to purchase and listen to the rest of the books in this story. This story was a quick revenge story that introduces you to the character and it tells you everything you need to know without telling you too much. I'm pretty sure this is one of those stories that was released after the main stories so if I want more backstory with character I have to read the main stories.
Anyway I strongly recommend this audiobook if you enjoy gritty medieval stories

I'm just going to say this. all the good reviews that you've seen about this series are true. This was an amazing adventure I love the characters. I love the audio performance. I love the story! I love everything about this. I have to admit I did not want this story to stop. when I got to the end of the story I was hoping that there was more but it's okay. The ending of the story kind of choked me up but it was perfect. I can see myself revisiting these characters and the story by listening again. stories like this make audible a great investment. I am going to read more stories from these two authors and the voice performer was amazing
thank you for an amazing story and adventure
