Great Mystery Sci-fi

Firstly, let me just say I really enjoyed this book. In the beginning I thought it was a bit slow but the characters were well done and I personally thought the ending was great. There were a couple of plot twists and some people will see them and some won’t. Overall, this was a great book.

Alright, so this book as touted as ‘like the Expanse’ and I’d say this is a fair assessment. The world built by the author has a very Expanse feel in that there’s the ‘earthers’ and then the ‘ringers’, similar to the expanse having the ‘inners’ and ‘belters’ (and nearly identical animosities). I particularly found the reorganization of earth cities into long metropolitan strings to be very unique and also made a lot of sense for a potential society.

The protagonist himself is sorta similar to the Expanse’s Miller - he’s akin to a bounty hunter who has made a lot of mistakes in life, drinks to much and only really lives for the job. The book flashes back to how he got this way and while Malcom (protagonist) lives a less than stellar life, you do end up caring for him.

Without getting to much more into it, the supporting characters are also themselves unique and well written. The book itself is part of a series but the second one is about a different set of characters (according to the description) and the way this book ended, a reader could realistically read only this book and feel they had completed a story if the thought of beginning another series is a bit daunting.

Overall, again - highly recommend the book for anyone looking for a shorter mystery sci-fi.

And as always, R.C. Bray provided a fantastic narration with consistent characters and an ever present enthusiasm for the story.

Anything Bray reads.....

Anything that RC Bray reads is good, he could read a manual on dissecting a slug, and make it sound exciting. Story was somewhat predictable, if I can score the follow on books on a deal...I would.

Awesome!

Definitely worth checking out. A hardened bounty hunter forced to team up to figure out who was behind a tragic event. The trail leads him to much more then he thought he would find and he has some hard decisions to make.

I wish things turned out differently in the end but all the same it was a terrific listen, and I’ll be coming back to this one.

A Bounty hunter that reminds me of James Raynor

A well thought out tale with plenty of action a dash of tragedy and a handful of intrigue. I've read enough books to figure out where it was going to end (though not quite the way I expected it to) that it wasn't a complete surprise but it was a welcome conclusion to the first book of what I can tell is a very well written series. I enjoy familiar mixed with the unexpected and this delivered nicely. I must also praise the gravely voice of R.C. Bray as it was most excellent in portraying the characters in the story. If there had to be a tv show or a move I'd hope they'd refer to his voice for the main character. It fits almost too well. Overall the story will pull you in and you will see what the character sees. Just enough is left to the imagination and the right amount is provided for you that you can almost pretend you are the main character. I will be returning to this story at a later date and more than likely continue it in the next books though this one can stand alone.

Killed off the main duo in the last seconds that you spent the whole book growing to like.

Great book, cannot wait for the next one.

Great story with developed characters. R.C. Bray was ...well R.C. Bray (fantastic as always). I am very much looking forward to the next in the series.

Great Sci-Fi story.

Great sci-fi story with a lot of twists and turns! I loved the interactions between Graves and his new partner and how different they were. R.C. Bray does an amazing job, as usual, providing the narrative and really bringing the characters to life.

Good sci fi!

I loved it! I feel like this is one of the more perfect first books. It set everything up for what I hope is more than a few in the series. I can't wait for the next one!
