Story
Nicholas “Coal” Claus used to love Christmas. Until his father, the reigning Santa, turned the holiday into a PR façade. Coal will do anything to escape the spectacle, including getting tangled in a drunken, supremely hot make-out session with a beautiful man behind a seedy bar one night. But the heir to Christmas is soon commanded to do his duty: he will marry his best friend, Iris, the Easter Princess and his brother’s not-so-secret crush. A situation that has disaster written all over it. Things go from bad to worse when a rival arrives to challenge Coal for the princess’s hand.

Hilarious!

Wow, just finished this one (listened to it on Audible). I was fascinated by a story that took a different spin on what really happens at the North Pole… who knew Santa could be so manipulative? I found Coal to be absolutely endearing. And his relationship with Hex was unique to say the least.
I enjoyed this enough that I preordered Sara Raasch’s next book: Go Luck Yourself.

Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life.

I loved Jada’s narration.

I was fortunate enough to get a signed copy of this during a recent visit to Detroit. It was so interesting to hear Jada’s perspective on all the things we hear in the news. And I appreciates her candor and raw approach to discussing her struggles over the years.

Story
Living in a year around Christmas town has its drawbacks. The caroling, the decorations, the insanely cheery spirit, it never disappears. It's why I like to hibernate away in my cave - I mean housekeeping a healthy distance from the holly jolly spirits. And all was going according to plan until my nemesis, Storee Taylor, moved in next door to care for her Aunt Cindy. Without blinking, she turned my simple world into a real nightmare-before-Christmas, especially when she decided to enter the town Christmas Kringle contest - which she was determined to win.

Super Christmas Spicy!

I just wrapped up this book after two days of power listening on Audible. I know there were a lot of conflicting opinions on this body with so many people saying “just wait for the second half.” And if you were looking for some spice, the second half is where it at. Also, I loved the narration with the team approach in Audible… and those narrator poems were the best!! I laughed out loud several times!!

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

A glimpse into 1950s America
Reviewed: 11-27-24
So, I have a physical copy of this book, but I decided to listen to it on Audible. At 423 pages, I thought the Audible version would allow me to get through it a bit faster. That said, I wish this is one I had chosen to read the old-fashioned way. Based in the 1950s, Washington D.C., this book is true historical fiction and talks about a lot of the things that were going on in our country at that time (the cold war, civil rights, the introduction of the birth control pill). So, reading the book visually might have helped me better take time to look up some of the references to refresh my memory.
That said, I absolutely loved the characters and how they all came together. I appreciated the chapters being told from one character's perspective at a time. It was a great way to see what she was all about.
And for lovers of historical fiction, this one will not disappoint.
Note: The Audible version does spend some time at the end with an interview between Kate Quinn and Saskia Maarleveld (the narrator), which was quite interesting.

Story
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

This book was fantastic… a heartbreaking story full of hope for a happy and safe future. All of the relationships that Lydia and Luca made along the way had me wondering how it would impact their journey towards the U.S. And I kept waiting for something horrible to happen with Javier. I did not expect he and Lydia to form a friendship.
If you find the stories of the cartels fascinating like I do (and horrifying), this book is for you.

This book is the continuation of The Road to Dalton and picks up the story 5 years later. It was interesting to see where the various characters were with their lives and how they continued to react to the tragedy that had struck their small town. It’s a good read!!
