This series is captivating as the Delightful Duo solves murders and other mysteries in the English countryside. Elizabeth Knowelden’s narration is spot on and so is the good natured humor, complete with endless cups of tea, scones and drawing room intrigues. Highly recommmended and “jolly good fun!”

Story
In a rare and gorgeous departure, beloved novelist Alice Hoffman weaves a web of tales, all set in Blackbird House. This small farm on the outer reaches of Cape Cod is a place that is as bewitching and alive as the characters we meet. These interconnected narratives are as intelligent as they are haunting, as luminous as they are unusual. Inside Blackbird House more than a dozen men and women learn how love transforms us and how it is the one lasting element in our lives.

Not Alice's best...
Reviewed: 05-11-21
Alice Hoffman has written many excellent and captivating books. This is not one of them. Having recently read The Marriage of Opposites, had hoped Blackbird House book would be as inspiring. Told by a stellar cast of narrators, the story begins with the first occupants of Blackbird House on Cape Cod: a fisherman and his wife and son. The following chapters take you through two centuries of occupants to current day, but none of them after the first family seemed worth writing about. While the excellent narration kept me listening, I was glad it was over in less than 6 hours!

The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

This book carried me to another time and place so completely, I just wanted to be there with "Cussy Mary." In spite of her challenges of living in poverty and facing rampant racism, "Book Woman" kept her focus on what was important in her life. She was kind, hard-working, generous, selfless and forgiving. Cannot say enough about this wonderful book except to add that i really appreciated the narration by Katie Schorr. i would read anything written by Kim Michele Richardson or narrated by Katie Schorr.

Intensely prescient, edge of your seat pandemic epic
Reviewed: 08-18-20
Prescient for our global pandemic, the author’s narrative is tight, compelling, and edge of your seat dramatic. In fact, it reads like a taught suspense film with plenty of humanity as well as science. This is the story of one man’s quest to understand and contain or eradicate a global pandemic as it spreads throughout the world. Excellent writing and narration. A must read for 2020.

Excellent YA Sci Fi
Reviewed: 10-26-19
This book took a bit to get into. It's told from the point of view of Needa, a geeky 10-year-old, and her grownup self as an astronaut aboard a space ship heading into outer space. The chapters go back and forth between 1986, when the space shuttle carrying her astronaut hero exploded, and the spacecraft, and involves time travel as well as speculative science. Once I got the pace of the story and into the head of Needa, the story got very interesting. I have labeled this book YA sci-fi because that is how it felt for me. An original story and nicely narrated by Kyla Garcia.

Engrossing Irish historical romance w/time travel
Reviewed: 05-27-19
This is my 3rd Audible book by Amy Harmon, including From Sand and Ash and A Different Blue. I loved all 3 and appreciate that each story is unique. Amy is a very talented writer and the narrators for What the Wind Knows, especially Saskia Maarleveld, are superb. Saksia never fails to amaze me with her vocalizing all the mens' voices in addition to the women's, and nailing the Irish accents. This book has an interesting twist on time travel and the historical part is fascinating. It brings readers into the inner circle of Irish freedom fighter, Michael Collins', as well as portraying the lives and times of 1920's Ireland. In all 3 of these books, a woman is at the center of the story, and women certainly tell women's stories best. i wanted to know more about this period in Ireland and What the Wind Knows was deeply satisfying, including the romance and memorable relationships throughout. Highly recommended.

Story
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Epic retelling by a Founding Mother
Reviewed: 03-17-19
Best historical novel i've read, this retelling of the founding of our nation is pure revelation. Cannot thank the writers enough for excellent research to reveal the Revolution and early American life as retold by Eliza Hamilton, wife of Alexander Hamilton, and certainly a Founding Mother. So many parallels to today's politics and fractions in our democracy, replete with fascinating details of Colonial America, the Founding Fathers including George Washington, the creation of the Constitution, banking systems, the role of the Federal Government and the states. So much that we never learned in school. Cassandra Campbell's narration is superb as always. Glad i have this in my Audible library, as i will listen again and again.

School shooting as experienced by 6-year-old
Reviewed: 07-03-18
First of all the narration of this book by Kivlighan de Montebello is awesome. The school shooting told from the point of view of Zach, a six-year-old, is certainly riveting. Found myself identifying with Zach and frustrated by the insensitivity of his parents and the adults around him. The author intended this theme as integral to the narrative, but the story is so well paced that it kept me wishing through most of the book that the adults would just "wake up." The story carries on months afterward and shows how Zach's family, friends, school staff and others cope after the terrible tragedy. Zach is a precious child, a real hero, and once again i cannot praise the narrator enough for bringing his story fully to life.

Story
Best-selling author Diane Chamberlain delivers a breakout book about a small southern town 50 years ago, and the darkest - and most hopeful - places in the human heart. After losing her parents, 15-year-old Ivy Hart is left to care for her grandmother, older sister, and nephew as tenants on a small tobacco farm. As she struggles with her grandmother’s aging, her sister’s mental illness, and her own epilepsy, she realizes they might need more than she can give. When Jane Forrester takes a position as Grace County’s newest social worker, she doesn’t realize just how much her help is needed.

Gradually drew me in, so glad i listened this book
Reviewed: 06-22-18
This started out as a slow read but i stuck with it as the reviews were encouraging. This was my first book by Diane Chamberlain and i wasn't that interested initially in a doctor's young wife who becomes a social worker. Gradually the story and especially the people pulled me in. Am so glad i listened to this book! Though i usually read books about other times and places, this one coincided with my childhood but in a completely way: a tobacco farm in North Carolina in the 1960's. The chapters, written in first person, primarily alternate between the two main characters: Jane and Ivy. There is a little back and forth in time, but mostly the story is a straight progression as the lives of two courageous women — and the injustices of the social welfare system of that place and time — become inexorably intertwined.
