The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything―everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome’s got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.

Cussy’s not only a book woman, however; she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.

Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere―even back home.

Engaging!

Hooked me from the beginning. Fascinating subject matter. Narrator very believable. The author told an amazing story that is not widely known. Loved it!

Wow!

Compelling, 'page turning', important, historically valid, and above all, HUMAN. And the narrator is perfect.

This Book Brought Tears To My Eyes!

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson was a wonderful novel that mixed romance, drama and a magnificent account of the history of the Appalachian people in the Hills of Kentucky during the 30's and 40's. The content reflected the serious depth of research Ms. Richardson did prior to this novel's birth. Yet the vivid descriptions of the Kentucky countryside, the well-developed characters, and the breath of the story itself, demonstrates how deeply talented Ms.Richardson is as an author. This book brought tears to my eyes at time! I was so moved by the struggles of the people at the time but in awe of their resilience, brought to life by Kim Michelle Richardson's amazing gift for words.
As this is an Audible selection I would be amiss if I didn't mention the truly outstanding performance of Katie Schor. Her narration of the writer's words brought this book alive. Her voice was mesmerizing! While I went about my household chores, time and place slipped away as she transported me from 2021 and the backend of southern Missouri, to the hills of Kentucky in 1930's! It was magical!
This is a book that belongs in a beloved place in my personal library. It represents why bookworms such as myself hold books in such high honor. For books truly mean freedom from the troubled world around us and the ability to gain knowledge to rise above the circumstances that seeks to tie us to the ground. As Dr. Suess so succinctly put it "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. - I Can Read With My Eyes Shut
