The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything―everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome’s got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.

Cussy’s not only a book woman, however; she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.

Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere―even back home.

I highly recommend this story to anyone who wants to learn about the trials of the blue people of eastern Kentucky. I fell in love with the protagonist as she traveled the hard paths to deliver books to those who would have had nothing to read without her
deliveries. The author uses the language of the times and of the people. Pick up a copy today. You won't regret it.

Heartwarming and well researched

Will definitely read this again! Having lived in Kentucky in my youth and teens for several years. A beautiful place! I had heard of the genetic disorder that causes blue skin. Not too long ago a man nicknamed “Papa Smurf” (maybe 15-20 years ago?) was in the news. One thing that has always amazed me is how the individuals that claim to be “Christians” at!!! VERY un-Christ-like! Read the example of Jesus and the Samaritan women at the well...The apostles were confused as to why Jesus would waist time with her. To Jews the Samaritans were “people of the earth” aka dirt! And a Samaritan woman was even worse!! And yet Jesus took the time to teach her about the kingdom of God. Yet the awful way people treat people is prophesied. 2 Timothy 3:1-3 and Ecclesiastes 8:9.
Will look forward to more from this author!

I’d give it 10 stars if I could! I never knew anything about the blue people from KY. This book was a very entertaining way to learn of this congenital condition. Thank you Author Kim Michele Richardson for your hard work and talent to write this book! Katie Schorr’s narration was perfect.
The plot moved along and made me hate to pause my listening sessions. I hated for this book to come to an end. If you don’t know about the Blue people of Kentucky, you may want to do a quick google search prior to beginning the story.

Based on real people and events, set in Appalachia in Kentucky during the Depression, this book tells of one woman’s fierce love and determination in the face of grinding poverty, hardship, tragedy and prejudice. Soulful and heartbreaking.
