Story
The Winternight Trilogy introduced an unforgettable heroine, Vasilisa Petrovna, a girl determined to forge her own path in a world that would rather lock her away. Her gifts and her courage have drawn the attention of Morozko, the winter-king, but it is too soon to know if this connection will prove a blessing or a curse. Now, Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers - and for someone to blame.

The worlds of myth and men collide and at the center is a witch.
Exciting, poignant & beautifully told. A satisfying end to the story but with a slight potential for more later. Another great performance by the narrator. So glad I took the risk on the first book.

A heroic underdog adventure with a little sword & sorcery mixed in. An enjoyable story, though it dragged a bit at times and left some things unexplored. Excellent narration. Author provides an expansive world that has potential for more.

A thrilling epic tale.

5 stars for the story. 3 stars for the narration. A gripping story that keeps pace and attention despite its length. It could easily have been broken down into separate novels but makes for an excellent omnibus. Don't let the length deter you.
Well written, it is a thrilling tale of war and defiance, dragons magic. I would have loved more from the epilogue but it allows for the opportunity to continue the characters.
The narration is only complaint. The pronunciation is inconsistent and when "shouting" becomes more indistinct and actually quieter.
I recommend the story but perhaps a different narration.

Story
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Generally I don't like sci-fi, but I think I will go for anything Cline writes. This is a great sci-fi story with tons of gamer & retro references, interesting characters & a story that keeps you guessing. Geek out, have some laughs and feel the intensity of defending Earth. An improved performance by Wheaton but at the same time feels a little less natural at times.

Story
The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth.

Good choice for movie, because they could trim it down without losing much. The heart of the story is excellent. Well written and well read. Crichton's research is thorough. However, until the story actually gets going it's like a lecture or a textbook. I found my attention drifting with all the historical reference. A lot of blah blah blah. Once into the story it was great with a few interruptions for more references. I was tempted to skip the first 3 chapters and all the references at the end.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

An enchanting story with all the smiles, gasps & cringes of the circus. It's well written with wonderful description. The contrast of narrators really sets the stage for past & present. The narrator for the younger Jacob adds excellent inflection & voices to characters. Highly enjoyable & recommended.
