Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

I thought it would never end but I paid for it do I slogged through it. The most unrealistic story I think I've read in a long time.

Really enjoyed the depth of the life lessons despite the ease of guessing the mystery way too soon. Truth always prevails for those who deserve our honesty.....despite the consequences. Lovely recollection of the mid 70s....

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

I struggled through it. Drawn out to the point of boring. I felt it was a great way to help the reader understand Trans issues but I didn't need the relentless preaching. It made the issue small when it is an important issue. So disappointing.

Story
As a young girl in Miller's Valley, an ordinary farming town that may be facing its final days, Mimi is observing adults, selling corn, growing up and changing, and watching the world around her change, too. As the years go by, the unthinkable starts to seem inevitable. Anna Quindlen's novel takes us through the changing eras of Mimi and her family, as secrets are revealed, and the heartbreaks of growing up and falling in love with the wrong man are overcome.

The Epilogue is the best part of the book
Reviewed: 05-19-16
Have you listened to any of Brittany Pressley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Brittany is one of the best readers I have heard. Her ability to use her speaking voice to portray the various characters' voices was quite authentic.
Who was the most memorable character of Miller's Valley and why?
Her mother, who is the matriarch is the most memorable. Her mother's ability to hold the family together regardless of the circumstances was the guiding force behind her daughter's being able to escape her lot and become a very accomplished woman. Like many matriarchs, the mother is steadfast and loyal despite her personal shortcomings. She is the glue that so many of us see in our own families. She is the strength behind the family.
Any additional comments?
At times, I may have sometimes felt like there were a lot of words used for a story line that was fairly typical but the ordinary struggles of the book are relevant to the reader because we all face similar difficulties and joys in life. Once you reach the epilogue, you begin to understand the purpose of the story. When we face the biggest challenges in our lives, we don't always see the relevance to the bigger picture of our life. In the epilogue, the main character is able to understand and have profound wisdom about her relatives in terms of how they effected not only her but each other. The book also suggests that when we are young, we are often not privy to the secrets of the past and it is not until we are older that understanding of our families' strengths and foibles become crystal clear. It was a profoundly powerful revelation to me as the reader.
