Loved it!
Reviewed: 01-10-21
For me, this was a hard book to read. I loved it nonetheless. Difficult as it was, it was so hard to put down. I had to know the outcomes and I absolutely could not predict them. The characters were so well revealed that I felt I new them personally. At times I prayed for them and encouraged them and cautioned them when I thought they were wrong. If you like a good mystery, if you enjoy very deep character portrayals and you can wait patiently for more to be revealed in the story's own time, I think you'll enjoy this book too. I'm breathlessly waiting for more from this brilliant author! The narration was perfectly done, an excellent fit for this story and these characters.

In love with Cormac Reilly!

Another twisty mystery swirls around one of my favorite detectives! Reilly is brilliant, so self assured and centered on his objective. I would hate to be a criminal in one of his investigations!

Story
A peaceful Minnesota town, where crime is something that just doesn’t happen, is about to face its worst nightmare. A young boy disappears. There are no witnesses, no clues — only a note, cleverly taunting, casually cruel. Has a cold-blooded kidnapper struck? Or is this the reawakening of a long-quiet serial killer?

I really wanted to like this book, but...
Reviewed: 07-19-20
I've read 10 of Tami Hoag's books and loved them. Wanting more of her wonderful characters and twisted stories, I selected this title. Yuck! The story moved slowly and there was so much sex that was entirely irrelevant to the story. It felt like reading some weird combination of a mystery thriller and a romance novel. I kept reading this annoying story because I wanted to know whodunnit. The ending, without spoiling the story for the rest of you, was a profound disappointment to me.

Story
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

This was such a delightful ride thru the 20th century. I loved every minute spent with Alan on his lifetime of adventurous journeys. It’s a very clever story, so endearing, and very well narrated too.

Story
On a foggy summer night, 11 people - 10 privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter - depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: The plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work?

Story
Amy Tan takes us deep into the illicit world of 1912 Shanghai, where beautiful courtesans mercilessly compete for the patronage of wealthy gentlemen. For the women, the contest is deadly serious, a perilous game of economic survival that, if played well, can set them up for life as mistresses of the rich and prominent. There is no room for error, however: Erotic power is hard to achieve and harder to maintain, especially in the loftiest social circles. Enter veteran seducer, Magic Gourd, formerly one of Shanghai’s “Top Ten Beauties” and now the advisor and attendant of Violet, an aspiring but inexperienced courtesan.

I've got to agree with other reviewers that this story was too short. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was just an appetizer. Now that my appetite has been whetted, I want more! Dear Amy Tan, are you listening? I'm feeling kind of teased, but maybe that was the point, it's part of the courtesan's repertoire?
Short as it is, I do recommend this tasty morsel.
