Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

grateful for new audio!
Reviewed: 08-20-23
When I first bought this, the audio was awful. The narrator was sick and so I returned it and just bought the book instead. there was a note on the book that said audible had fixed the audio, and I'm sooooo glad they did! I loved reading this book and then loved listening to it. I can't wait for the next one in Nov!

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I very rarely DNF books. I go through so many per month that it just makes more sense to keep listening to them, but unfortunately this was a DNF for me. It was SO slow for me. A few other reviews mentioned that if someone like 11/22/63 they'd like this and I disagree. 11/22/63 was excellent. This was just so snoozy for me. I don't like King's horror books and loved 11/22/63 and really hoped to love this one but I just couldn't get past the 12 hour mark...

Reminds me of gone girl...
Reviewed: 08-20-21
This book reminds me of gone girl... Which would be great if I didn't detest gone girl. I don't like reading a book where I detest all of the characters. The only one I didn't detest was Benny... I'm glad I managed to finish the book (which is why it got 2 stars instead of 1) but I did end up returning it...

Just OK...
Reviewed: 12-03-20
The story started slow and didn't really grab you like the first one did. It seemed a bit like a repeat of so many AI stories that we've all heard mixed with tons of 80s pop culture. It wasn't terrible if you looked at it at face value but when you look at it as a sequel to an excellent book, it definitely fell flat. I strongly believe that some books just shouldn't have a sequel... But since there is one - I would have rather seen more about a new contest told thru a new hero or heroine like one of the low five, with the high five taking on supporting roles. There was such promise there that would have been great to read. I'm sure that will be in the next book but it would have been great to experience in this one. Maybe thru the low fives pov channels... In the end this book just had too many lost opportunities.

Why is there no PDF?
Reviewed: 12-01-18
There are so many things described that are hard to picture, especially since they may be one of a kind pieces. Knowing it was a walk through the exhibit, I expected there to be a pdf to help those of us who may never make it to the museum to see it. Natalie Dormer was an excellent narrator, a few of the guest speakers were so soft spoken that at times they were hard to hear even while increasing the volume.
I enjoyed the book but was bummed that there weren't any pdfs to see some of the things that were described.
