Good but not as good as the previous two in series

The book didn’t really get good until 2/3 of the way through. I liked the way it circled around to the first book. I would still recommend this to anyone who like the first two books.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

This is what they call “ a real page turner” I stayed up till 4 am to finish it. Plot twists and plenty of red herrings. Even a couple places that made my heart race. Definitely worth a read.

Story
In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood.

Very good writing
Reviewed: 09-09-24
Christina Henry did an excellent job of writing a story of Wonderland that is for adults but keeps a bit of that style of the original whimsy in the writing. During some of the darkest parts there would be a little bit dry, matter-of-fact humor that is very reminiscent of Lewis Caroll.
I’m a big fan of twisted Wonderland stories and am VERY critical about how people interpret Cheshire. Cheshire in this was perfect.

Laughably cliche

If you’re looking to read the same basic formate of emotionally damaged woman is thrown into intrigue after her BEST FRIEND is murdered and finds love and herself along the way, this is the book. I couldn’t finish it so maybe there’s a great twist at the end. But the main character was such a dud, the reader’s voice is annoying and I can’t help but feel like I can guess the end without reading it.

Compared to other stories this was just so-so. Also there seemed to be more clichés than I expect from this author. The main character’s attitude of “they can’t do/solve this without me” in the situation put herself and others in danger.

Story
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

One of my favorite books and the one that turned me on to Catriona Ward (Sundial is also an excellent read). The twist at the end is still so good and the amount of care and research that goes into the story is incredible.
I only gave 4/5 for performance just because the “meowing” and other cat sounds are impossible to be preformed by a human without being annoying.

From the author of Simplicity Parenting comes an elegantly simple and inspiring plan to help parents set limits, correct behavior, and influence a child's decision-making by playing three specific roles: the Governor, of younger kids; the Gardener, who watches, listens, and decides on the right course of action for school-age children; and the Guide, who collaborates with increasingly mature teenagers.
