Story
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

Great stories, a little disjointed
Reviewed: 10-21-23
The section on the Salem Witch Trials was brutally shocking: the inhumanity, treachery and most vial of human traits… Then the book takes different story lines that span centuries and come back together in a less than satisfying manner. Really three books, thinly related to one another.

Story
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

John Grisham continues his string of some of the best legal stories ever told. He blends southern culture, myths, the law and court room drama. Wildly entertaining.

Story
Loose Balls is, after all these years, the definitive and most widely respected history of the ABA. It's a wild ride through some of the wackiest, funniest, strangest times ever to hit pro sports -- told entirely through the (often incredible) words of those who played, wrote and connived their way through the league's nine seasons.

Fun and an education on some of the building blocks of what we now call the NBA!

What a roller coaster ride this book is. Up, down and around. Surprises around every turn. Too bad that so little is preserved for the annals of history. However, this book allows for the stories to live on through its pages. The narration is mostly done by the actual characters recalling the stories they lived through in their own words.

Story
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

Amazing man
Reviewed: 01-02-21
Wow, John D was a fascinating, amazing, complex and flawed man. He created an extraordinary industry that became the backbone of the world economy for more than a century. He developed controversial business methods that though anti-competitive, grew an empire out of a little used commodity. His unwillingness to cede his monopolistic drive to crush his “enemies” led to his perceived downfall.
He was a dichotomy of both charitable giving and ruthless tactics. His greatest impact should be remembered for bringing medicine into the 20th Century from the Dark Ages of Quackery. His generosity to higher education and Historical Black Colleges and Universities will endure forever.
