Bordeaux, 1367. Having angered the bloodthirsty Don Pedro, King of Castile, Sir Thomas Blackstone is thoroughly sick of his mission for the Prince of Wales, but must remain true to his oath. Good little mystery; odd choice in narration
Reviewed: 07-25-24
The story is good; the author is always consistent from book to book. I have an issue with the choice of narrator. While her narration is good and not terribly annoying, her accent of the main character is Midwest and not southern in the least. Southern accents are hard to get right, so I understand choosing good narration over a bad accent. However, somewhere between this book and the previous book, the narrator started t-glotting the name Martin. T-glotting like a youtuber is not a Southern convention. It is annoying. I should probably turn it into a drinking game to make it more tolerable.

Good family road trip series with discourses on contemporary geopolitical concepts. Examples of both tolerance and intolerance of others' values, ideas, and opinions.

Just can't make it through... Narration is tragic
Reviewed: 10-27-22
I have NOT finished the book. I tried. The narration is weird. She's usually a very good narrator... It may be the direction. I don't know. Reading in a choppy pan-slavic accent is disturbing and adds nothing to the flavor of the story.

Story
Captain William Avery is persuaded to investigate, and soon discovers a web of rivalries and hatreds, both personal and political, simmering behind the club's handsome façade, and in particular concerning its resident genius, Alexis Soyer, "the Napoleon of food", a chef whose culinary brilliance is matched only by his talent for self-publicity. But Avery is distracted, for where is his mentor and partner-in-crime Jeremiah Blake? And what if this first death was only a dress rehearsal for something far more sinister?

The Dutchess is just too much. She reads like she's getting a pedicure. I've never heard the word "said" pronounced the way she does - I'm from the South and even I know that's way too many vowels.
