Story
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Oh my, what a fantastic story. First, Julia Whelan is the BEST narrator. The dialog is laugh-out funny or heartbreaking. The characters are endearing, the ending is storybook (of course). Loved it all.

Story
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

First, Julia’s narration was top notch, as always. This was my first time with this author and I wasn’t disappointed. The characters had the usual fraught emotional damage we all suffer from. They were lovable, relatable, and so sweet. The setting and community are worthy of a fairytale, The tension was great, the story a bit long, but came to a nice conclusion. Highly recommend.

Oh vey… the narrator!
Reviewed: 11-10-23
Story was good, not great. Lost interest in the “kids” and kept forgetting names and relationships. If I had read it (rather than listen to it) I would have given it a higher rating. But - the narrator. Bad on so many levels. Normal speaking voice is grating, very unappealing, and too young. Male voices were substandard. Then, when attempting emotion, I felt like my ears were going to bleed from the harshness. Detracted so much from the story. I only felt relief when I was done.

I was happily surprised to see Suzanne Enoch writing a contemporary - I had switched genres years ago, but always enjoyed her regency-era novels. This was a fun book. I enjoyed the characters and look forward to their continued story. The narrator’s voice was a little annoying (natural voice) but the characters were fine and easy to distinguish.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life – a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescues. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare.

I recall having enjoyed this back when originally published. I didn’t engage with this version. The narrator’s voice was ok, but sounded much older than the female lead. The book felt “choppy” and lacked the character development that would have made some of them more likable - maybe it translated better in writing or I’ve just grown more “picky” (spoiled by Nora Roberts.)

Love the smart and sassy mouthed lead. This is a slow build to introduce back stories and characters which are necessary for book two, then OMG. Narrator is good; a few moments where male and female voices couldn’t be distinguished, but didn’t detract from listening experience overall. Highly recommend the series!
