Story
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Overly melodramatic
Reviewed: 06-13-24
I somehow managed to limp through half of this book before giving up. The writing and performance are overly melodramatic, with little nuance. None of the characters are in the least bit compelling. I'd be happy to let the volcano swallow all of them up. That would be more interesting. Don't waste your money on this.

Story
When he was just a fledgling birdwatcher, Jonathan C. Slaght had a chance encounter with one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. Bigger than any owl he knew, it looked like a small bear with decorative feathers. He snapped a quick photo and shared it with experts. Soon he was on a five-year journey, searching for this enormous, enigmatic creature in the lush, remote forests of Eastern Russia. That first sighting set his calling as a scientist.

Interesting tale
Reviewed: 06-07-24
This was a fascinating look into an aspect of science that I just hadn't given much thought to - specifically, the incredibly difficult work involved to study species far from so-called civilization. I learned a lot about Eastern Russian and Blakiston's fish owls. This could have been incredibly dry or boring but the author does a superb job at crafting a compelling narrative. And he did an excellent job with the narration.

Story
Raging ambition. Towering egos. Competition under a veneer of courtesy. Heroic effort combined with plagiarism, theft, exaggeration, and fraud. This was the state of bird study in eastern North America during the early 1800s, as a handful of intrepid men raced to find the last few birds that were still unknown to science. The most famous name in the bird world was John James Audubon, who painted spectacular portraits of birds. But although his images were beautiful, creating art was not his main goal. Instead, he aimed to illustrate (and write about) as many different species as possible.

I enjoyed this book start to finish. Kenn Kaufman crafted a thoughtful, educational, and entertaining narrative about the ornithological landscape of the early United States. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in birds and history. And I'll definitely listen to it again.

The story didn’t keep me interested. I barely made it through to the end and I still don’t care about the characters (except maybe the “gerbil” hesho) or their world. I like most of Brandon Sanderson’s other writing, which is why I stuck around with this series for so long. But I guess the series isn’t over and I just don’t care what happens next. It took me forever to finish because the plot of this book was so boring.

Predictable story, irritating narrator
Reviewed: 06-20-21
The story barely kept me going enough to listen to the whole recording. The plot was predictable and the characters were unoriginal (and often just insulting caricatures and stereotypes). The narrator was difficult to listen to. Her female voices were sometimes OK, as was her straight narration, but the male voices were grating.

Kind of pointless
Reviewed: 05-14-21
The book barely kept my attention. I guess the best thing I can say is that it mostly didn't outright annoy me. About 80% in though, the plot sort of reached what seemed like a conclusion but just kept going so I stopped listening as I couldn't imagine anything happening that would make what I'd slogged through worth listening to anymore. I just didn't care about the characters or their situation. The world building was minimal and didn't hold my interest. A real disappointment as I had enjoyed the clever world building in Children of Time.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Story is OK but all the extra...
Reviewed: 03-13-21
I only made it halfway through and was just so bored I had to stop.
What seems to be the main plot seems kind of interesting. But there is SO MUCH filler information that just bogs it down. I just couldn't stick with it and didn't care about the characters enough to find out what happens. The subject matter is important but half of it is as interesting as listening to a college textbook read to you.
