I listened to it

the reader is actually pretty good. different voices. decent gender voices.
the first chapter of so is not like that. I really thought I'd be returning the book at that time.
but after that it quickly became clear there was some reason for it because she got way better.
the story was ok. pretty hard to care about but the action is pretty good. it's sort of like having manga described.
overall for bang for buck it was not bad not on the level of black ocean 80 hours 1 credit but I listened to the whole thing and may again when I'm desperate for a book.

Story
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

I did not find much to think about here. some mysteries pop up but never seem to hold any substance. it's mostly a story about a military operation against an inferior force.

Story
This is the story of Michael Talbot, his family, and his friends: a band of ordinary people trying to get by in extraordinary times. When disaster strikes, Mike, a self-proclaimed survivalist, does his best to ensure the safety and security of those he cares for. Book One of the Zombie Fallout Trilogy follows our lead character at his self-deprecating, sarcastic best. What he encounters along the way leads him down a long dark road, always skirting the edge of insanity.

it's not too bad. main character is likable. it honestly sounds like this story is therapy for the authors own PTSD. lots of insight to issues of combat.
lots of combat.
also it sounds like these maybe a lot of marine Legends put into a new setting. I listened to the whole thing. I likely won't listen again but I don't regret listening.

having a real hard time letting it be enjoyable

The right wing crazy is strong in this one. Not like John Ringo either. John Ringo is completely right wing nut and makes no bones about it in his books but enjoyed his books quite a lot.
This is like dropping right wing crazy like... done badly. Like some books add "space" in front stuff to make it sound sci fi.
humans are space faring but only... America... and to emphasize that its "The American <blank>"
not like once or twice either. like often.
and then the first president class cruiser.... "The Ronald Reagan"
and yeah the president casually using profanity is a little... immersion breaking.
Its too bad as the beginning of the book sets up a pretty cool premise and then just kinda... abandons it.
But hey its 50+ hours right? Still has potential but im not feeling it yet.

ok but why couldn't they figure this out?
Reviewed: 09-09-18
story does this thing of telling the listener that x is a thing and the characters have not a clue that x is a thing.
even though things happen that make it pretty clear that x is a thing and the characters are completely part of those things that make it clear.... they dont even question it.
but... otherwise its a pretty good story.
there was something about the writing or the reading that made the story seem... muddy. the ideas were not crisp as some books offer. I am not sure how to explain that. but some books can very clearly and simply describe a scene and this series seems to have trouble with that for me.
The whole series skips the coming of age part of the characters. They start as super bad ass and dont stop. except for the secondary characters. But they hit super bad assery and then have to figure out how to control it.
the book is very detailed with a lot of subtlety in the details and so maybe not so good for background listening.

Can't get laid
Reviewed: 09-09-18
seriously there is a lot of cant get laid in this book.
very serious people that cant get laid and if they do... oh its trouble.
But yeah this book was very easy to love.
its got mystery. violence. coming of age. horror. magic. and a bunch of stuff.
it flows well. each story has its own mysteries with characters that are fun to like.
The narration is good, although there are very long pauses between some things. So long i thought my audio paused. that breaks immersion as just as im about to check and see if something is wrong with my phone it starts up again. you know what i mean. but thats pretty minor concern in light of the overall story.
Its got some things it doesnt explain well but as an overall story none of that matters.
it was a lot of fun to listen to..
going to keep this in my library and likely listen to it several times.

weird sex
Reviewed: 07-23-18
the story is interesting but ultimately didn't go anywhere.
just leaves it hanging.
the back story has a lot of sex in it.
some of it I was like "WTF is this even here for"
most of the back stories don't really add to the main concept.
I mean they are important but like... who would ever tell a bunch of strangers these stories in this detail that stray so far from the mission at hand.
"hey stranger, we got a lot of time why don't you tell me why you are here?" ok! here's my life story with all the thrusting and whatnot from my sexual escapades and let me tell you about glistening body parts too.
woa! hang on. I don't need to know that you fat bastard. jeebus. forget I asked.
but it's not a bad book.
lots of ideas of tech and government and weird religion and hinted paradox.
just could be a lot shorter and nothing would be missed.
