Story
Laila desperately wants to become a mother, but each of her previous pregnancies has ended in heartbreak. This time has to be different, so she turns to the Melancons, an old and powerful Harlem family known for their caul, a precious layer of skin that is the secret source of their healing power. When a deal for Laila to acquire a piece of caul falls through, she is heartbroken, but when the child is stillborn, she is overcome with grief and rage. What she doesn't know is that a baby will soon be delivered—by her niece, Amara—and delivered to the Melancons to raise as their own.

I loved it!

Magic, ancestry, healing, southern lore, Harlem culture. What an intriguing story of the supernatural and how it connects to our everyday lives. The Melancon’s story is absolutely enchanting. As an individual born in the south who moved to New York City, I felt attached to the nuances of this story. Excellent listen. Just in time for spooky season.

Story
Edie is stumbling her way through her 20s - sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage - with rules.

Dark but likeable

I love the Brooklyn backdrop. Young life in NYC is fascinating. I took many pauses in listening to this novel, because her perception of life is so intensely dark it was difficult to stomach the story at times. I appreciate that the story is real, and stark, and raw. I would read it , versus listening, next time. I also loved the narrator, Ariel Blake. Her attitude and tone matched the story perfectly!

Story
Aria is no stranger to tragedy. Fifteen years ago, a family outing took the lives of her father and baby sister, leaving remaining members of this fractured family struggling with their own guilt - real and imagined. At 25, Aria believes she can reinvent herself through her planned marriage with all its promise of a family of her own. Her infertility changes her life as swiftly and irrevocably as the urban landscape around her.

Decent story

This book gave me a reprieve from the usual dark and morbid things I read lately. I liked the down home feeling of southern roots and family themed concepts.
The narrator did a good job.
