Packed with action and gore. I should have liked it more.
Reviewed: 02-07-24
I should have liked this story more than I did, because it’s right up my alley. There were some strong moments, but for some reason it just didn’t connect with me. As much as I thought it would that may be because I just never felt that invested in any of the characters, I was entertained, but I was never really worried about the outcome for any of the characters.

On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest. Great ideas in a well told story

I very much enjoyed the story. In the beginning, I stumbled a little bit with the pronunciation of some of the names and honorifics, but once I got “climatized “ to the world building that was going on it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Well worth the effort!

Story
During the day, he’s a South Chicago high school janitor, slopping a mop around from nine o’clock to three o’clock, five days a week. At night, hiding out in a boarded-up factory, he attends to his damaged interstellar spacecraft, making repairs and counting the days until he can return to his homeworld of Calunoth. All he needs to do is mind his own business and avoid any messy human dramas for just a few more weeks. But it is on one of those quiet nights when he hears them outside: the MP140s. Named for a police radio code for murder, they're among the most ruthless killers.

Don’t come here looking for intricate plotting or well thought out characters. I suppose it’s a nice bubblegum rump with a lot of instant gratification moments

Interesting concept. Hard to empathize with (almost) anyone. Redeemed a few places where I had trouble suspending disbelief by the end. Worth your time.

Entertaining and engaging. An odd couple/buddy cop story crossed with magical fantasy elements, all with a sense of humor wound throughout.

Just didn’t do it for me

There are a lot of elements in the story that I would expect to like. The author evokes shades of Bradberry (Something Wicked This Way Comes), Gaiman (Coraline), Barker (The Thief of Always), and Stephen King (It). I feel like the author, and I would share a lot of the same favorites in our reading list, and could maybe have an interesting conversation about them. However, at the end of the day, the story just fell short for me. The ramp up was great, but the grand finale felt more like a really, really long episode of “Davey and Goliath”.

In the first installment of the A Fire Beneath the Skin trilogy, the city of Klaar has never fallen. No enemy has ever made it across the Long Bridge or penetrated the city's mighty walls. Even when a powerful invading army shows up at the gates, the duke and his daughter, Rina Veraiin, are certain that it poses little threat. But they are cruelly betrayed from within and, in a horrific spasm of violence, the city is brought to its knees.

Good idea, so-so execution, A fun read.

Good idea, so-so execution, but a fun, entertaining story that didn’t blow my mind (I’d sorta hoped it would).
Main character’s “super powers” are a little unearned somehow (for me). Was a good SoCal to NorCal commute listen however. I think I will give the next one a chance.
