Why is this book so damn short?

I was just settling into another great Curtis Sittenfeld novel when it ended I had no idea this was just a short story, not even a novella. So disappointed!

Story
Fourteen-year-old Carey and six-year-old Jenessa have been living in the woods with their mother for as long as they can remember; the sheltering trees and a broken-down camper are all they know. But what they’ve never been told is that Carey vanished from the real world ten years ago, when their mother took her, causing an uproar in the media - and in her father’s life.

Great narration made this book even better. Heart wrenching story with some parallels to Emma Donahue's Room. I liked the first person voice of Carrie. Altogether a very enjoyable read.

Stunningly written, a very dark story
Reviewed: 06-16-15
Would you consider the audio edition of The Harder They Come to be better than the print version?
Probably not. T.C. Boyle is a wonderful writer, and I enjoy his work on paper as well as by audio. That said, the reader here is topnotch.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Harder They Come?
The beginning where the characters, a bunch of seniors on an excusion from a cruise ship, encounter grave danger.
What about Graham Hamilton’s performance did you like?
Overall performance was excellent.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
NA
Any additional comments?
This is one of T.C. Boyle's best. If you like his other contemporary novels, like the wonderful Tortilla Curtain, you'll like this.

Story
Lacey Yeager is young, captivating, and ambitious enough to take the New York art world by storm. Groomed at Sotheby's and hungry to keep climbing the social and career ladders put before her, Lacey charms men and women, old and young, rich and even richer with her magnetic charisma and liveliness. Her ascension to the highest tiers of the city parallel the soaring heights - and, at times, the dark lows - of the art world and the country from the late 1990s through today.

Too much background research, too little story
Reviewed: 12-20-12
What would have made An Object of Beauty better?
A plot line. It was mainly a description of the art auction business, with underdeveloped characters who weren't sympathetic. Maybe it got better, but I gave up about a quarter of the way through.
Would you ever listen to anything by Steve Martin again?
Sure
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
No
What character would you cut from An Object of Beauty?
Seemed to be mainly two characters, and I could have done without both of them.

Not my thing

This book is of the fantasy genre, which I didn't fully understand when I bought it. It is well written and has an excellent reader. No doubt it will be enjoyed by those who are into fantasy. But after listening to about a quarter of the book, I had to stop because I grew weary of the impossibility of the characters, plot, and setting. Even though it is a fantasy, I wouldn't recommend it for children. It's way too dark.

Story
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 09-29-07
For those who loved "Prince of Tides," this is the book for you. Those (like me), who found POT overwritten and melodramatic, King of Lies will be just about unlistenable. Another disappointment is the reader. He is good but lacks the southern accent necessary to make the locale (and story) believable. I gave up on this book about two-thirds of the way through.
