Story
How do you tell your part in the biggest tale in history? I ask because it's what I have to do. I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player (and a pawn) in a interstellar chess match to save humanity, or to see it fall. Witness to history. Friend. Daughter. Human. Seventeen years old. Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don't know my tale: How I did what I did—how I did what I had to do—not just to stay alive but to keep you alive, too.

Probably skippable

I loved the first 3 books in this series. I wish the editor/director had made sure proper nouns had the same pronunciations as the previous books' narrations. This is 95% a retelling of the other stories from Zoe's perspective. The other 5% was interesting, and written as well as the other books up until this point. However, the change in pronunciation of names combined with the mostly old content makes me think I wouldn't have missed much skipping this one.

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Excellent Story, Excellent performance

At first I wasn't sure about the narrator's voice, but it wasn't long until it just fit. I liked all the various voices he chose for the male characters, and his voices for female characters was acceptable.
The story was very engaging, with a lot of thought-provoking concepts hidden in an interesting narrative. I enjoyed the world-building, especially in that I feel I can fully imagine the world but I can't remember any moments where the author veered far from the story just for the sake of explanation.
I recommend this to any fan of SciFi, or even fantasy-military, stories.

Better than imagined

I thought the Pimsleur courses would be like other learn-while-listening audio courses. I thought it would just be back and forth, one language and then the translation. I hoped it would be better in that the sentences would be related. This is so much better. Everything is related. You feel like you are quickly progressing even while reviewing.
Pimsleur is now my goto for listening practice.

Needs to preface quotes
Reviewed: 07-24-21
This book, so far, is very informative, interesting, and well read. However, this book has a lot of quotes in it from industry experts. I am sure in text, those quotes ate probably in their own paragraph, font, or at least "quoted". When read in the audio version, there is no pause or differentiation in the quote versus the author's text. The reader needs to say, "...story story. Quote. What they said. End quote. Person's name. story story..."
Without calling out the quotes, it is often awkward to listen to, and to determine what you just heard was author-advice versus quote.
