The author takes their time explaining things, so if you're the type that likes to conjecture the rules of a universe, then you may enjoy the invitation to guess. if you prefer grounded rules and hard magic, you mau become frustrated. I kept getting stuck on why the MC has a particular item, and then the MC acts like he knows the local tech better than the natives. There's only 2 characters interacting at once 90% of the time, meaning the dull MC is constantly talking to a mirror that is only making the MC seem far less interesting in the dialogue and he doesn't have anything instrinsicly to offer. It's a power fantasy with an seemingly inconsistent or poorly explained universe system and technology. The voice actor for the audiobook is perfunctory, it's a fine performance but dry. I was attracted to it due to the SBT logo but the voice acting cast is the best part of this book. I initially gave this book a harsher review but I relistened to the second half with a more open attitude and agree with the other reviews that this story is a good start for a new universe, but I still find the first part of the book to be a combination of frustrating, boring, and a bit broken.

I loved book one, it was so much fun even tho it was a bit tropey, but overall, book 1 was like an anime adventure with a classic protagonist. book 2 is like when DBZ tried to use Gohan as the main character but its just not the same. It has a lot of adventure, the characters were all here, but it lost a lot of presence and panache without the main from book 1.

overall, it wasn't as gripping and felt like it dragged on but it's a nice continuation of the story from book one. the author has stated on his personal Facebook (since shutdown, he felt oppressed for expressing conservative views, I think he got bans for a reason), that book 2 is the last one he plans since he wants to focus on his own universe.

idk what his other books are like, but overall book 2 was enjoyable, just not as much as book 1

this was the first time I've ever listened to a fictional audio book from start to finish. I usually listen to self help and biographies, but another review on this book caught my eye while I was looking for a road trip listen who had similiar taste. I really liked how the characters are setup, the scenes, the props, it was easy for me to imagine because it was anime af, there was the gruff reluctant hero, the dandy reluctant hero, the way too enthusiastic psycho, I could easily pull from my pool of character archaetypes and imagine them in a fantasy setting because I've watched or read so many, but there were some scenes where I felt really engaged and some scenes where I did feel touched by the characters and their actions. Obviously this book takes a lot of inspiration from other sources but this book has also inspired me to give more audiobooks a try.
