About this listen
A portal opened, and Perry's curiosity got the better of him.
Once.
Twice.
Three times did Perry step through a portal, each to a new and strange world.
He stepped through into a world of advanced technology, power armor and micro reactors.
He stepped through into a world of knights and kings, orcs and goblins, where old wizards handed out magical swords.
He stepped through into a world of hidden vampires and rainy streets, where the clocktower tolled the hour as ships sailed by.
Perry is a Thresholder, one of many exploring the vast multiverse. Able to bring ideas, technology, and magic with them as they travel, each Thresholder has an oversized impact on the world they're in, each one attempting to shape and change it to their will. Some, like Perry, try to uplift the world and improve everyone's circumstances, while others are interested only in gaining advantages for themselves.
Why should Perry leave his mark on one world, when he can leave it on all of them?

Have you ever come across those stories with heroes who knew just how to get things done? The ones who were masters in five different martial arts, and knew ten ways to skin a bear after killing it with their bare hands? Yeah, that wasn’t me. Hell, I had trouble asking a girl out on a date. But someone in clerical must have made an error. Because I got ripped from an airplane on my way home after my last day in the Coast Guard. I mean, come on, I wasn’t even in one of the hardcore branches of the military or anything!

John Doc Henry had been on the shortest, crappiest end of the stick since the first day of his life; no parents, bad foster parents, and abysmal luck at every turn. The day his life changed started out exactly like he had come to expect. His car died on a rarely traveled road, and he broke his toe shortly after dodging the one other car on the road. When it stopped and backed up to him, the license plate read “LADYLUK”, adding insult to injury.

Hi, my name's Max and I'm one of the Selected. What's the first thing that pops into your head when you read those words? A great hero, chosen from among all the billions of people on Earth? A lucky man who has ended up on an unknown world and gained superpowers? An explorer of new worlds who has discovered his destiny? Well, that's all true, but there is one but . . . Actually, if I'm honest, there are a whole load of buts. And there are rules. And the first rule of the Selected is: "Try not to die. It is expensive and impractical."

Story
Everyone could see it coming. But one man could do something about it. Oh, he couldn't avert the nuclear holocaust, but a scientist in Austria, ruthlessly using billions of research dollars for his own purposes, set himself up and out: he created a time machine, and filled a warehouse with low-tech survival gear. Too bad he didn't get to use it himself. Instead, a team of American grad students, led by their professor, is sent back to the late Roman Empire. Even though they are experts in this time and place, they are about to realize that books and actual experience are very different things.

Story
Ralph could be described as a rogue on a good day. A bad day involved a lot of cursing, calling him a pirate, or sometimes even having a shoot-out. It wasn't really his fault of course, or so he would have you believe. It was the fault of those who wanted to get in his way of making as much money as possible as a smuggler. His family had been gifted with a letter of marque for the Terran Confed, one that is inherited and has been passed down to him. Essentially, it gives him a lot of loopholes and ways through regulations to be a fantastic smuggler. Or as a legal pirate, a Privateer.

Story
The Krysfelt Academy for Girls is the most prestigious academy in the Magocracy, and it’s about to get its first male student… Like most guys, I never expected to see the inside of that fabled place. But when I’m assigned the Enchanter class—previously reserved for girls—an invitation to Krysfelt is part of the deal. To earn my place, I’ll have to win over the fiery headmistress and the monster girl students—catgirls, orcs, wolfgirls, dryads, goblins—you name it… And that’s not even mentioning the pretty (but slightly insane) tiefling girl who believes she and I are destined to bond…

Story
It is difficult to say when the Immersion happened. There is little doubt as to where it began. It was in a village. Despite an impoverished life, the village held a community rich in the love of life and each other. Some would say these conditions are the essence of an Immersion. Mik and his friends are at that age when the future looks infinite in all its possibilities. Life in the Village has never seemed so good. This year they attend the county fair as adults. But there is a world outside that cares little for the country people and their yearly celebrations of life together.

Story
At its heart, Lifelode is the story of a comfortable manor house family. The four adults of the household are happily polyamorous, each fulfilling their ‘lifelode’ or life’s purpose: Ferrand is the lord of the manor, his sweetmate Taveth runs the household, his wife Chayra makes ceramics, and Taveth’s husband Ranal works the farm. Their children are a joyful bunch, running around in the sunshine days of the harvest and wondering what their own lifelodes will be.

Story
The redemption of the Erimocan Manaar had been incomplete. They had sought vindication, from any connections they had to the Reaping, through the eradication of the evil that they had failed to contain. But the true redemption of the Erimocans would never exist without a return to balance. The Immersion at the Windbeck County Fair was only the beginning of a struggle for that balance.

great second half
if I were to give it a positive spin I'd say this book does a masterful job of portraying the confusion and lack of understanding you might experience going through a portal to another world.
real talk, I had very idea of what the heck was going on the first 4 hours or so...
after that however it hit it's stride and became easier to follow and the second half was friggin' awesome.
still, 4 hours is a long time to expect people to hang around
not much to say about SBT, they are the masters of their particular brand of narration, no one does it better

Good first book!
Very entertaining book with an interesting concept. Since the concept is built around world-hopping I did think we stayed a bit to long in the third world. I understand that the author wanted to tell that story, but I found it the least interesting of the 3 worlds we visited in this book. It was good though to learn of the "villain" back story that had visited 10 worlds to get a taste of what else was out there.
I did miss a lack of explanation to why the main driving force in the story happened. I couldn't come up with a good logical explanation to why this whole system was set up like that. Hopefully that will come in the next book.

the most 6/10 story I've listened through
The author takes their time explaining things, so if you're the type that likes to conjecture the rules of a universe, then you may enjoy the invitation to guess. if you prefer grounded rules and hard magic, you mau become frustrated. I kept getting stuck on why the MC has a particular item, and then the MC acts like he knows the local tech better than the natives. There's only 2 characters interacting at once 90% of the time, meaning the dull MC is constantly talking to a mirror that is only making the MC seem far less interesting in the dialogue and he doesn't have anything instrinsicly to offer. It's a power fantasy with an seemingly inconsistent or poorly explained universe system and technology. The voice actor for the audiobook is perfunctory, it's a fine performance but dry. I was attracted to it due to the SBT logo but the voice acting cast is the best part of this book. I initially gave this book a harsher review but I relistened to the second half with a more open attitude and agree with the other reviews that this story is a good start for a new universe, but I still find the first part of the book to be a combination of frustrating, boring, and a bit broken.

A good start to a new series
it was an interest premise. It spends time setting up for the next books, but has a lot of potential as a series. It would stand as a solo book also. The characters are interesting and have some depth. The narration is great!

Interesting, just...
Interesting idea, but told in a boring way or distracting way. Very first chapter makes it seem like we are starting the story after his two previous portals, but then we go back to a talk with his sister and start time skipping like crazy.
The MC is kinda boring and pessimistic.
