Story
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

I really found the first 4/5ths a drag...finally found action and worthy dialog in last 4 or 5 chapters.

Another complex but clear 'period mystery'
Reviewed: 06-19-23
CJ Archer is masterful in her creative schemes that have complexity and well-crafted & appropriate red herrings. Portrayed distinctly to the period and complemented by Marian Hussey's superb narration. Archer also does a hold job reminding us (or newly telling readers new to the series) of key background profiles.

Story
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Great 1st two third, poor current religion insight
Reviewed: 07-12-19
Pinker delivers mostly as promised for 1st half, nearly 2/3rds of this book. this might be great 20:20 hindsight. But gets haughty, reckless, and overly contemporary in last third. I struggled to complete.

Story
Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights) - to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders.

Goodwin's presentation including Lynfon Johnson did not feel a fit here amongst those less self-centered. But near the end you learn it was thru a feeling of obligation to finish a biography.

We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

I look to see lead character Erica Foster a bit more consistently believable as a character. written consistently but something not quite right such as her perception about figuring the crime and her being oblivious as well.
