Not the type of story I expected from Follet having listened to several of his books. Even so, it had me anxious to continue listening everyday. Highly recommend.

I highly recommend this book. This was my first Nora Roberts book but not my last. If I was pressed to find anything wrong I suppose it would be the numerous lengthy sidebars of the story, but otherwise I couldn’t wait to listen.

Story
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Authors like Steinbeck and Hemingway have left their mark in literature. But I think Stegner has matched, if not surpassed them, with Angle of Repose. I encourage you to listen to this tale of struggle, adventure and bravery. And I can’t say enough about the narrator who made me feel as if I was actually there. I don’t think I will soon forget this amazing novel.

I recommend listening to this book. Burton weaves a story that is mesmerizing but without the minutiae that clouds a good story. I look forward to listening to another Mary Burton book.

Story
In Montana's Gravelly Range, paw prints and a single whisker discovered at a scene of horrific violence suggest a woman has been attacked and carried away by a mountain lion. Sheriff Martha Ettinger employs her fiancé, sometimes-detective Sean Stranahan, to put a name to the gnawed bones comprising all that is left of the body. The woman's is the first of several deaths that Sean suspects are not as easily explained as they appear.

Because the narrator droned on without much excitement. I think the story is worth a listen but honestly it was difficult and painful to listen to the narration. Glad it’s over.

Story
Half a century ago, an aberration was spotted by one of our earliest satellites, and summarily dismissed as a hardware malfunction. But it was no aberration. And no malfunction. It was an accidental glimpse of something extraordinary, and very old. Mocked for decades, the man who designed the satellite is now dead. With the system's original data firmly in the hands of former NTSB investigator Joe Rickards and anthropologist Angela Reed.

Story
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Krakauer and Brick. The most thought provoking and chilling account of Mormonism.

I can’t say enough good things about Krakauer’s writing style. From Into Thin Air to Under The Banner Of Heaven he tells the story in a logical, precise and intriguing manner. I encourage everyone to listen to Under The Banner Of Heaven if for no other reason than to know more about America’s religious sects and often her brutal history.

Story
Was it justice... or revenge? What drove a simple farmer to set out on an impossible quest after a gang of bloodthirsty killers that raped and murdered his wife and slit his small son's throat? Their trail led him halfway across the country and deep into Mexico. One by one he tracked them down and brought them to justice, sometimes at the end of a short rope, more often in front of his fast guns, and he didn't care which.

A Texas hero....
Reviewed: 01-28-21
Being from Texas and always dreaming about cattle herding and big sprawling ranches this book meant a lot to me. The descriptions of the cowboys and the way they looked, talked and worked the herd was so vivid, so real in my mind. Not sure I’ve read a book recently that never used a cuss word or detailed the love between a man and a woman. It was a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed every minute. I felt good after listening to the story of Matt Henry and realized this was a true Texas hero. If you want a feel good story narrated by a great voice please get this book. You won’t regret it.
