Story
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

Overrated!!! And tedious.
Reviewed: 06-14-25
I’m surprised by all the good reviews of this book. For me, it was oh so tedious. The Gabriel love story was sophomoric and unbelievable, the trial was ridiculous, and overall the story felt both contrived and derivative, if that’s possible. The narrator was good but she read very slowly, making an already too-long story drag on and on. If you listen to it, put your narration speed at 1.2, which helps. I made myself stay with it because of the reviews but wish I’d just given up on it early and gotten my life back.

Very disturbing, haunting, and ultimately beautiful. Excellent writing and narration. Will stay with me for a long time. There were points when I didn't want to continue because it was upsetting, but I'm so glad I stayed with it. One of my favorites.

Story
It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and Charlotte and Seth are not looking for romance. Armed with emotional-support bear spray, Charlotte is in self-imposed isolation and on guard from men. Having a stalker can do that to a person’s nerves. Just across the hall and giving off woodsy vibes is Seth, a recently divorced arborist. As in today recently. Heights, he’s fine with. Trust? Not so much.

Narrator is EXCELLENT. I’m not even sure how to review this book other than to say that I loved it and was affected by it. It is a dark topic but is wise and humorous and ultimately life-affirming and uplifting. It is sentimental in places but not maudlin, i often read books and instantly forget them, but this will stick with me.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 12-17-24
For me, this was an oddly flat, and sometimes meandering telling of a powerful and timely story. The first part of the story about Bird and his father and the life they are living, is very good. After that, the story loses steam and impact. Just my opinion - others seem to disagree so if it sounds like it would be of interest to you, go for it.
