A New York Times best thriller of the year!

"Matters culminate in a courtroom fireworks display worthy of Perry Mason in his prime. The Murder Rule holds one’s interest from its cheeky opening pages through its final scene." —Wall Street Journal

For fans of the compulsive psychological suspense of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a mother daughter story—one running from a horrible truth, and the other fighting to reveal it—that twists and turns in shocking ways, from the internationally bestselling author of The Scholar and The Ruin.

First Rule: Make them like you.

Second Rule: Make them need you.

Third Rule: Make them pay.

They think I’m a young, idealistic law student, that I’m passionate about reforming a corrupt and brutal system.

They think I’m working hard to impress them.

They think I’m here to save an innocent man on death row.

They're wrong. I’m going to bury him.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the author’s other books! It engaged me and wasn’t predictable. One point that bothered me was the use of British colloquial terms and situations in a book set in the US. The editors should have caught these errors. I also wondered why only one character had a southern accent when most of the characters were from Virginia. Didn’t make sense to me.

Not American enough

I enjoyed the storyline and got so engrossed in finding out what was next. I'd definitely recommend it for fans of her work.

I found Hannah unlikeable since she justified doing anything and everything in pursuit of her “justice”. So disappointed. So much rang false. I’m no lawyer but everything regarding the case background and court proceedings were easily determined (even by a layperson) to be bs. And the twist at the very end? Ridiculous.

Boring. Law aspect was all wrong.

I thought the narration was great. The story was very good, had some very good sharp turns. Even the twists that were a bit expected still maintained a nuance that was fresh.
I felt connected to the characters, especially Hannah. Even when Hannah was behaving badly I was rooting for her.

Very good legal mystery.

I have read other books by this author, and this book is not in that league. It’s entertaining and well written for the most part, but it was definitely a disappointment. You could drive a semi through the gaping plot holes and it just wasn’t all that interesting or intriguing. The best I can say is that it is “fine”, but nothing special.

Disappointing but adequate

It was hard to take breaks from this book because it was so riveting. The characters were well defined and the book was so suspenseful. Great author!

Excellent story

Fun story. Lots of ups and downs. McTiernan is a great story teller. Reads a bit like it was written for TV or a movie. Definitely worth the time (at least for me).
