I really don’t understand why authors write books full of wholly unlike able characters. Adam is the only decent adult. The rest are just awful people

Story
Amira’s less than thrilled to be spending the weekend with her husband’s university friends. Two of them are hosting a joint fortieth on a private Scottish island, with vintage champagne, expensive gifts, and soaks in the wood-fired hot tub. Despite the luxury, Amira knows she’s going to feel left out, not to mention freezing cold and cut off. When they decide to play ‘two truths and a lie’, anonymously posting three statements about themselves into a box, years of resentment start bubbling to the surface. And then an extra slip of paper emerges, scrawled with three chilling threats

The book was great. Compelling and original. Perry, Olivia and Park being almost wholly awful people made it difficult to get through, however.

Unsympathetic protagonists

Can’t sympathize with Lowen at all. Any character who goes after a married man or woman is just an awful person. And the cheating spouse is awful too. The awfulness of the antagonists can’t be used as an excuse when it’s something that had been brewing before they (protagonists) knew how awful she was. I don’t understand why so many authors use cheating spouses as a plot point. It’s the opposite of interesting. Makes me steer clear of anything from that author.

Just an outstanding book. Had me from the beginning. My only quibble- and it’s a minor one - is when the mom eventually apologized and reconciled with the daughter, her apology still came across as blaming others for why she did what she did. There’s no “hey, nobody pushed me into this, I just made horrible choices and was an awful person. No excuses.” It was more like, “well I felt neglected and invisible so that lead me to do what I did.” Sort of marred the ending a little for me.

Story
Nora Harmon has a lot to be thankful for: two great kids, a stable marriage, and now, a dream career. Software consultant Jane Bell wants Nora on her team. She’s offering a fantastic salary, flexible hours, and a chance to travel the world. It sounds too good to be true, but Jane won’t take no for an answer. Jane acts more like a friend than a boss, and Nora’s personal and professional boundaries begin to blur. Jane is smitten with Nora’s perfect family—particularly her daughter—and far too attentive to Nora’s husband. Nora can’t help but feel insecure and unsettled.

Can’t make it more than an hour into the audiobook because Jane is so unbearably awful. And Nora is just letting Jane insert herself into the family. So is David! He’s just watching Jane begin to try to edge Nora out of the family and he doesn’t seem to care. I’m out. Gotta find a book with less annoying characters. Everyone here is awful so far
