Sixteen-year-old Alice is spending the summer in Paris, but she isn't there for pastries and walks along the Seine. I haven't read a YA novel in a long time.
I honestly was not expecting the ending and what happened. But I loved the story, the way both young women had a purpose, has passion and a love for their families.

Story
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Story
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

While the book was lovely, the ending was quite a cliffhanger. I understood there are not always happy endings in the traditional sense, I only wish Guillame found love, and Souren to not die in the fire. But in their own way, they achieved peace.
The atmosphere was beautiful, stunning and quite imaginative.

Story
The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, one of the most respected organizations throughout all of England, has long been tasked with maintaining magic within His Majesty's lands. But lately the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman - a freed slave who doesn't even have a familiar - as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England's once profuse stores of magic to slowly bleed dry. At least they haven't stooped so low as to allow women to practice....

It took a few chapters to fall in love with the whimsical atmosphere, but I found the creatures of Fairyland delightful, the contemporary controversies very relevant. The narrator kept me drawn into the story.
I adore Zen Cho's writing style and hope to read more.
