About this listen

"A quick read that history lovers will easily devour" (Teen Vogue)

"Get ready to be transported to Paris in Taylor's incredible debut novel." (Seventeen, Editor's Choice)

Code Name Verity meets Jennifer Donnelly's Revolution in this gripping debut novel.

Now:

Sixteen-year-old Alice is spending the summer in Paris, but she isn't there for pastries and walks along the Seine. When her grandmother passed away two months ago, she left Alice an apartment in France that no one knew existed. An apartment that has been locked for more than 70 years.

Alice is determined to find out why the apartment was abandoned and why her grandmother never once mentioned the family she left behind when she moved to America after World War II. With the help of Paul, a charming Parisian student, she sets out to uncover the truth. However, the more time she spends digging through the mysteries of the past, the more she realizes there are secrets in the present that her family is still refusing to talk about.

Then:

Sixteen-year-old Adalyn doesn't recognize Paris anymore. Everywhere she looks, there are Nazis, and every day brings a new horror of life under the Occupation. When she meets Luc, the dashing and enigmatic leader of a resistance group, Adalyn feels she finally has a chance to fight back.

But keeping up the appearance of being a much-admired socialite while working to undermine the Nazis is more complicated than she could have imagined. As the war goes on, Adalyn finds herself having to make more and more compromises - to her safety, to her reputation, and to her relationships with the people she loves the most.

This was a very moving story. I am so amazed by the courage of the people who fought against the tyranny of the nazis.

This was a very moving story. I was amazed by the courage and determination of the the individuals who joined the resistance. I also liked Alic’s determination in uncovering her family’s history.

So good!

Loved it! The writing was excellently written and the two narratives wove together so smoothly. Definitely a must read.

I was expecting something different but so glad it was the story it is

I have met and spoken with some who were the young people involved in the Resistance. This story captures it so well and puts a face to it. Excellent.

Quick read that history lovers will easily devour

This is the second WWII Paris historical fiction novel I've read recently. If you enjoyed The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, you'll appreciate this one. It's YA so it's not as intense, but it has a great plot, wonderful characters, and the narrators of the audiobooks are superb.

During #mentalhealthawarenssmonth, reading about Alice's mom's struggle with depression is right on topic. A quick read that history lovers will easily devour.

A new favorite of mine

This is a new favorite for me. It’s a mixture of lilac girls and Alice Network. The author did a great job in my opinion of blending the 1940s era France with the young American girl in modern day figuring out the mystery of her family. If you are a fan of this genre give this debut title a try!

A great story that touches on different aspects of life.

An intimate look on family communication sprinkled with intrigue and history. It also helped me understand why people ignore others with depression. If they don’t understand they just let the depressed individual linger which is the worst thing you can do. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new family dynamic.

Alice is 16

So, not appropriate for 13 year olds! Well written and good story with good ending but says written for teen audience and I would not want my 13-14 yr old granddaughters reading this due to the 19 and 16 reference to them sleeping together

Good Read

Slow start. Really enjoyed Adalyns story but found myself board or irritated with Alice's story and always waiting and looking forward to getting back to Adalyn. Despite that I would still highly recommend the book.

I Liked this ww2 novel

This was a good read however I did have a hard time liking sone of the characters
Especially the grandmother she was a very cold and not sympathetic person.
The parents were dysfunctional. I did like Alice and Paul and the other minor characters
The narrators were very good

Main character is very young, and hard to relate to

Great story but hard to relate to Alice only being 16 years old. Would have been better if she was a little older and more mature.
