Another lovely cosy fantasy from Travis Baldtree. I am here for them all. And Fern and Porkchop are perfect.

This story, this setting. I love what the dragons do for my imagination. And I wanted to dragon so I could eat Alex’s father. 4.5 stars rounded up.

And the narrator really didn’t fit this book for me. Toooooo ponderous, too serious. And I wonder why she used such a painful speech pattern for a character who had hearing issues, when it was pretty clear from the text that this character no longer had her “childhood speech impediment” in most situations. Meh on that, but magic story.

Sigh. I’ve liked Kate Readjng and Michael Kramer’s readings of other books, and both are very skilled readers, but this series needed more grit and less pomp. I gutted through the reading, felt like a chore. And I think the book would have been a lot better had it been about half as long. Perhaps 3 star story, but I gave a bonus for the last 5 hours. That’s where it finally got riveting.

This will go down as one of the best books I’ve listened to this decade. Heart-swellingly beautiful story, great reader (though his American accents made me, an American, giggle a bit). I feel incredibly fortunate that this was my first John Boyne. So much back catalog awaits!!

This is simply, heart-swelling lay lovely. One of the best I have listened to in my thirteen years as an audible member. And yes, I am well out of the YA age demographic.

Ikeda's reading is lovely; I'd give up in disgust without her understated accents and cadence. Harkness's writing, however, could have used a vigilant, firm editor (who could easily have cut a third of her words). I'm gritting my teeth and rolling my eyes at the description and over-description and repetitions of the same description of wine, vampire hairlines, demon kisses, and I'm only a third of the way through the book. I really wish Harkness didn't take herself so seriously. This a mediocre story that tries to be intelligent and scholarly, and it has nothing, nothing on any of the books in Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire series, which succeeds at being clever, silly fun. Still, it's an amusing enough listen while I clean the kitchen and do other boring household chores.
