This story pulls at your heartstrings in so many ways. For those of us who remember Vietnam on the evening news in our childhood this brought a perspective that was very meaningful to me. The women and the men who are our Vietnam veterans deserve our gratitude and respect in ways that they never received. The story brings you there in a marvelous way. It is both heart wrenching and intriguing with insightful twists of plot. I came away with an understanding of the experience of Vietnam that was very meaningful to me.

I am so glad I listened to this beautifully written back all the way to the end. It’s written beautifully But the story takes you to a place of empathy for parents with difficult challenges. At times it was hard to listen to. I almost gave up several times, but I’m so glad I didn’t the end was worth it. I am changed forever in my understanding of what it means to love your child and the choices they make for their lives.

A must read for anyone who cares about race relations and growing as a compassionate person. It artfully peels back the layers of unconscious bias and the facets of prejudice that we, who are not people of color, have long denied. Truly impacted my perspective.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have loved Anna Quindlen's books, but this was difficult to endure until the end. I enjoyed the last 1/4 of the story, but the first 3/4 was dark, unpleasant, and depressing. The abortion issue is alive in this story. Really lminimized the grief and sadness of such a decision. I did love the strong and smart woman the lead character portrayed, but didn't enjoy most of the story.
If you’ve listened to books by Anna Quindlen before, how does this one compare?
Nothing like them.
Which character – as performed by Brittany Pressley – was your favorite?
Margaret
Do you think Miller's Valley needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No
Any additional comments?
Quinlin writes courageously about issues important to women, but this story was unpleasant.
