North Korea is on the verge of having a nuclear weapon that could reach all of the United States, Russians have mastered a new form of information warfare that undercuts democracy, and the role of China in the global community remains unclear.

There's a sentient human inside Hayden after all
Reviewed: 05-13-18
My only prior knowledge about Hayden came from the Snowden information which left me wondering if Hayden has any humanity left in him. He is not Darth Vader or perhaps he is now redeemed by a far worse internal enemy: Trump. His words give me faith that the horrors of the IC post-9/11 were commensurate with the time, not a reflection of evolution in the IC. Or maybe he is just a phenomenal com-agent persuasively winning the likes of me over. But I end the book feeling some hope that wasn't previously there.

The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".

Third time listening to it and I'm still getting more each time. I especially appreciate how women are (finally) holding key positions and rolls that aren't just figureheads or totems or lesbians (though that's normalized too). Despite the political and cultural upheaval happening throughout the series, strength of character is what carries the day.

Given the consistent history of Richard Clark's predictions coming true, I hope the next President and all his/her key advisors read this as a manual to be followed step-by-step. The citizens of this country should not have to take another Anthem data breach to prove that cyberwar is asymmetric and we don't want to be on the loosing end of that conflict.

Story
Our surveillance state was born in the brain of Admiral John Poindexter in 1983. Poindexter, President Ronald Reagan's national security adviser, realized that the United States might have prevented the terrorist massacre of 241 Marines in Beirut if only intelligence agencies had been able to analyze in real time data they had on the attackers. Poindexter poured government know-how and funds into his dream---a system that would sift reams of data for signs of terrorist activity.
