To keep the story fast paced Candon regularly introduces new characters. These include writers who attend her retreats as well members of the small Colorado college and ski community. There seem to be a surprising number of murders but it is mystery after all

Story
In the winter of 1906, Lady Emily and husband Colin are invited to the opulent home of Baroness Ursula von Duchtel in the Bavarian alps. Outside is a mountainous winter wonderland with a view of Mad King Ludwig’s fairy tale castle. Inside, the villa hosts a magnificent but eclectic art collection—as well as an equally eclectic collection of fellow guests, among them a musician, an art dealer, a coquette from the demi-monde, and Kaspar, the Baroness’ boorish son-in-law, whom, it begins to appear, someone wants dead.

Her connection with her husband Colin and her difficult mother-in-law are explored and we come out understanding all three better. By the end they are returning to London and i look forward to that

Reviewed: 05-30-24
This is a story of love, family, history, intrigue and disappointment. I wanted answers but had to have the patience to read the story slowly and let it unfold. Religious, social and class differences collide with no hope of resolution or so it seems. You will want to skip pages but if you cheat you will lose your understanding of the many storylines. stick with it and you will be rewarded
