Story
Rome, AD 270. In the wake of the emperor’s marriage ban, rumors swirl that there is one man brave enough to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. A public notarius and leader of an underground church, Valentine believes the emperor’s edict unjust and risks his own life for the sake of his convictions. But as his fame grows, so do fears for his safety. Iris, the daughter of a Roman jailor, believes regaining her sight will ease the troubles at home. Her last hope rests in searching out Valentine and his church, but the danger of associating with people labeled a threat to the empire is great.

Fantastic Story
Reviewed: 06-24-25
This is one of the best books I've listened to in a very long time. It is a story about Christians and their persecution under the rule of Romans. Overall, this is a love story that deals with faith under incredible persecution and loss. Be warned the ending is a tear jerker. It does deal a lot with faith and conversion to Christianity, so if that would bother you then you may not enjoy this novel.

Story
Mackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack one wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

Movie was better than the book
Reviewed: 05-26-25
The movie was vastly better than the book. This book is all about one man's tragic loss and his relationship with God. The book has detailed religious tenants based upon how the author understands certain Christian doctrine and interprets whatever version of the Bible he reads. It is the doctrine and his interpretation that didn't sit well with me and caused me to rate the book as I did. If you agree with the author's view on Christianity doctrine then you'd probably love the book. The movie leaves out a lot of those doctrine details and personal interpretation and focuses more on the characters and their relationship to each other which I enjoyed far more.

Story
Promising architect Peter Young is shot dead at his desk. DCI Craig Gillard is on the scene, looking at what appears to be a brutal and highly professional hit: two bullets, fired with ice-cold calm. Gillard knows that the most crucial question in solving the crime is one word: why? Two weeks later, on the Lincolnshire coast, another body is found on a windswept beach. In this case there is no identity for the young man, just a curious brand burned into his neck....

Very Disjointed and Boaring
Reviewed: 04-04-25
Parts of this book were decent. The sub plot of what can happen when adopting older orphans from a foreign country and custom and culture they bring with them was interesting. However, the book was so disjointed it was hard to follow and see how things tied together. There were a few great moment in the book that made it seem promising but they were few and far between. Overall I had a hard time getting through the book as it had horrible pacing. The characters weren't that great or well developed. I would not recommend this book.

Painful
Reviewed: 02-01-25
I am surprised at how bad this book was. The first 6 chapters was like sitting through a military briefing. The author used so much technical detail that it killed the story and pacing of the book. In addition the book was very disjointed. Characters would suddenly appear from one place to a totally different place at just the right time with no description as to what happened to get the characters to that particular place. It was if there was an entire backstory that was missing that would have joined everything together. Overall this book was awful.

The performance was okay but not great. The story itself was so simplistic it was almost childish; as if it was written by a very young teenager trying to be a grownup. The whole thing was painfully predictable and boring.
