About this listen
Rome, AD 270. In the wake of the emperor’s marriage ban, rumors swirl that there is one man brave enough to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. A public notarius and leader of an underground church, Valentine believes the emperor’s edict unjust and risks his own life for the sake of his convictions. But as his fame grows, so do fears for his safety.
Iris, the daughter of a Roman jailor, believes regaining her sight will ease the mounting troubles at home. Her last hope rests in searching out Valentine and his church, but the danger of associating with people labeled a threat to the empire is great. Still, as Iris's new friends lead her to faith in God, Iris is drawn to Valentine, and they both begin to hope for a future together beyond the treacherous empire.
But when a past debt and a staggering betrayal collide, Valentine, Iris, and everyone they love must fight for their lives—and wrestle with trusting a God who can restore sight yet does not always keep His followers from peril.

Sarai, the last child of her aged father, is beautiful, spoiled, and used to getting her own way. Even as a young girl, she is aware of the way men look at her, including her half brother Abram. When Abram finally requests Sarai's hand, she asks one thing—that he promise never to take another wife as long as she lives. Even her father thinks the demand is restrictive and agrees to the union only if Sarai makes a promise in return—to give Abram a son and heir. Certain she can easily do that, Sarai agrees.

A must-read of deep importance
This was my first title by Jamie Ogle. The audiobook version was excellent, and I plan to purchase the paperback for my favorites shelf. I was deeply moved by the characters and their plight. Never have a read an account that made the Christians of 3rd century Rome more accessible. The story is a beautiful letter of love to all our fallen brothers and sisters and the God we serve. The imagery in this book is expertly aimed at the heart of each reader. With Iris, we experience her blindness, her fear and the growth that not only brings her to the one true God, but keeps her standing in the face of cruelty and loss. With Valentine: I was encouraged to be unwavering in faith with his example of finding peace and courage that only God can provide. This book is important, and I will shout it from the rooftops. Read it!
