The story is wonderful and magical and I couldn’t be happier. But, what truly makes this audio book come to life is Lisa Flanagan’s absolutely stunning performance!!! Even without being told when the narration changed characters, I always knew. The variety and depth to her voice work is second to none.

Enjoyable & Unique Hero/Coming of Age Story

This is a wonderful and unique coming of age and heroic tale. The heroine is unlikely and easy to love. The characters around her are varied and interesting and somehow feel like an entirely possible set of people. I look forward to sharing this fairy tale with my children when they are old enough.

I found Kate Winkler Dawson through Buried Bones and was immediately drawn to her take on historical true crime. Her narration is measured and thoughtful, which allows the complex information to come through clearly. She smoothly transitions between the historical beliefs of the scientific community of the time and modern scientific beliefs. I think this is a great book for the true crime obsessed, the hobby historians (who are often also obsessed), and those who are new to either genre, but like a thorough and complex story.

I also love that it is a wonderful balance of history, science, crime, and justice, in all the convoluted ways those can be discussed. It is not lurid or gory or shocking for the sake of drama. It is straightforward as it can be and never feels like it dishonors the victims, which can be a major downside to many true crime stories.

It would probably surprise nobody that listening to Mr. Rogers would be a positive addition to their day, but at the end, I felt encouraged and supported. When I listen, I find certain pieces always stand out as more applicable to what I am currently dealing with in my day to day life. It’s nice that it always has something appropriate to help and it is comforting to hear Mr. Rogers giving advice.
