Wow. I just finished listening to this audiobook. I love how the characters were such attractive, successful, deeply loving people with equally terrible struggles. No spoilers here, I won't speak too much about the struggles, but the strength of the women was inspirational and despite ambivalent feelings remained strong . I really loved the the "best friend"ship. I may listen to this one again. I know I will go see the movie for sure. I hope it is as true to the book as it can possibly be. And next I believe I will seek out more work by this author. Definitely don't miss this story. it's epic and it resonates deeply.

Story
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Honoring the women of Vietnam
Reviewed: 03-01-24
I am 1970 model and my parents were the Vietnam era. My father was unable to enlist and was then never drafted, but I grew up among many who had lost their dads, uncles, even grandfathers in Vietnam. I grew up watching MASH which was Korea but was still the type of mobile/temporary hospital that was featured in this particular story. That enabled me to picture these units the nurses and doctors and corpsmen served in. I loved this tribute to the nurses esp, who came home and were denied the services they needed. (I am also a nurse who has horses, the therapy of my life as well) I also love that the women of Vietnam brought to the public eye and general knowledge of women in the military. Maybe not as much in the moment of their homecoming, unfortunately, but definitely since. And this book is a greatvtribute to them. I love Ms. Hannah's ability to tell a story. Ive read several of her books and have enjoyed them . Also Julia Whelan is probably my favorite narrator. Ive picked audio books I was on the fence about just because she was the narrator. (In the mens category, RC Bray) Anyhow, if you are on the fence about reading this, give it a go, You wont regret it. I rarely write reviews, just rate books , but I was compelled by this one.

Story
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

the magic and romance
Reviewed: 01-09-24
The plot was creative, the characters likeable, the magic was fun. I enjoyed the romance but like most romances in stories, the reluctance and the time it took to get resolved seemed to take overly long. I did like how it ended but it seemed like it wrapped up super fast. Overall I enjoyed this book and would read a sequel. I will check to see if there is one.

But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

Liked this story even more than A Gentleman in Moscow. No spoilers, redemption flows strong, likeable characters, clips along well.
Couldn't go wrong with Edoardo Ballerini! I picked up this story on Audible without seeing who the narrator is, and when I started it playing and it said who it was, Im glad I was alone in my truck because I think I actually did a fist pump and blurted out a "oh hell ya!" Hes so good that I might grab books just because hes narrating, without knowing anything about the story.

When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard.
