Story
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

"The Credit Belongs" quote has long been a favorite of mine and hangs framed near my desk. The connections between shame and this quote add a new dimension to what I love about it. This book is truly outstanding and should be a must read for every parent, teacher, and leader.

Story
Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But in this revolutionary audiobook, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet.

I am a type 1.5 diabetic and as a result of what I learned in this book I lost 15 pounds in three weeks, eliminated my daily 2000 mg of metformin (with doctor approval) and reduced my need for insulin by over 50 % to roughly 26 units a day. Well written and easy to follow. Much thanks and appreciation to the authors!!

Story
It starts with the body of a Hollywood producer in the trunk of a Rolls-Royce, shot twice in the head at close range - what looks like "trunk music", a Mafia hit. But the LAPD's organized crime unit is curiously uninterested, and when Harry follows a trail of gambling debts to Las Vegas, the case suddenly becomes more complex - and much more personal.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

Wonderful Story Well Told

Since the author asks us to tell her where we read her book, it was actually listened to on my 1 hour each way daily commute to and from work. The story is sensitively told and made me feel the emotions of the characters. I hope there is or will be a sequel as I have bonded with the characters and want to know what is next for all of them. I am a book collector and reader as well as an audible subscriber and especially enjoy books on books. Plus, the narration is outstanding! Thanks so much

Connie Willis' Best Work
Reviewed: 08-07-19
I have had the pleasure of listening to several of Connie Willis' books and this two-book series is clearly the creme de la creme. Her attention to detail in telling a very complex tale with many different but connected plot lines is nothing short of incredible! In the end, Connie Willis' makes a very strong case that our purpose for living may be tipping the balance - impacting the world in small ways that we may not even realize but that nevertheless change the course of history. Thank you so much!
