2 books with wildly different pacing.
Reviewed: 10-26-23
The first book has a classic fantasy book feel and follows the normal "introduction, body, climax and resolution" pacing. The fantasy world is explained well and I like the main character and all of the other characters. The "Big Bad" is described well enough and his minions are villainous enough to make you hate them.
The second book is totally different. We start off with a huge plot twist. The characters seem to deal with the twist without much conflict. Everything falls into place so neatly that there is no internal conflict and the external conflict never causes much stress. One character wants to be a blacksmith and it just happens that the ranger who finds them is from a family of blacksmiths and has an unused forge. There is no real climax and the closest thing to a climax is brought on so early and is over so quickly that you won't even realize it was the climax. The resolution, which you won't even realize is the resolution, is nearly a 1/4 of the book. It probably has the opposite pacing of a Frank Herbert book, where he may have the climax on the last page of a book and not even bother with a resolution.
However, I enjoyed the first book well enough to make it through the mediocre 2nd book and I may try the third. I just hope the main character from the first book, who is barely in the 2nd book, returns as the main character in the following books.

Story
From the dark days of World War II through the Cold War, Sergey A. Kondrashev was a major player in Russia’s notorious KGB espionage apparatus. Rising through its ranks through hard work and keen understanding of how the spy and political games are played, he “handled” American and British defectors, recruited Western operatives as double agents, served as a ranking officer at the East Berlin and Vienna KGB bureaus, and tackled special assignments from the Kremlin.

Better than expected
Reviewed: 08-01-23
To be honest, when I can't think of the next book to listen to, I randomly pick a book that Pinchot narrates. His readings of some Aliens books and Larry Correia books has made me a fan. I picked this book randomly and it was better than expected. It really showed a man who did the best he could with what was given.

Not bad.

The story is convoluted but on purpose. The first alien you meet sounds like Jack Nicholson doing a Jack Nicholson impersonation. Also, a very minor character has a Kathrine Hepburn imitation and one of the inmates sounds like Baby Cakes from China, IL.

“Shy” Hunt and the tech team from McAllen Integrations thought they’d have an easy job - set up environmental systems for the brand new Hasanova Data Solutions colony, built on the abandoned ruins of a complex known as “Charybdis”. There are just two problems: The colony belongs to the Iranian state, so diplomacy is strained at best, and the complex is located above a series of hidden caves that contain deadly secrets.

3 quarters of a good book.
Reviewed: 12-09-21
I enjoyed most of the book but near the end it drags. A character has to debate committing treason and instead of making the decision all at once, he debates it with himself over and over again.
Also, I prefer if action portions read at the speed of the action. I do not want to read for 6 minutes about a fight scene that takes place in 2 minutes.
The performance was good but there are too many characters for one person. I don't understand why they don't have a female and male performing books together that have a lot of characters.

Story
Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online. This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.

This could almost be Aliens 2.5
Reviewed: 09-29-20
The voice acting is great considering they had two original actors reading their own parts. This could almost be Aliens 2.5 If Ridley wasn't found with her crew mates in Aliens 3.
