This started out really fun and juicy, exactly what I wanted for a little end of summer listen. About halfway in, when they go to the mob party, it just flatlines and gets kind of dull. Good voice acting.

Story
Emily has come a long way since she lost her two passions 15 years ago: music, and Rob. She's a psychologist at NYU who helps troubled college students like the one she once was. Together with her caring doctor husband, Ezra, she has a beautiful life. They're happy. They hope to start a family. But when a tragic event in Emily's present too closely echoes her past, and parts of her story that she'd hoped never to share come to light, her perfect life is suddenly upturned.

So Corny. So Bad.

I was certainly not expecting a masterpiece, but the two days I spent listening to this book were torture. I could not wait for it to end. It is everything cringey, predictable and poorly written you hope to not find while reading - even if it’s a light read.
Girl has *perfect* life - doctor husband, successful career as a therapist, etc. Her ex (who didn’t seem like the greatest guy to begin with??? Handled her accident like an a-hole) writes a song about her that becomes a hit single. She fights with her husband. Hot singer is in town that very night! Wow! She plays with him! Turns out she was not just in a band in college, but she is a superstar who should be on tour!
Cue trip to a tropical place with her ex, not without a cringeworthy sunscreen application scene. Does she love him, or is it music she misses? You’d think a therapist might have a better grasp on this sort of thing. There are more sensitive topics woven in, but not well. It is all very trite and goofy. And just when you think the worst is over, there are two songs at the end.

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

Did I miss something?

I think I picked the wrong novel for my first Tana French. Yes, the writing is subtle and lovely. But wow - the characters were uninteresting, and not a single story line came to a satisfying resolution. I kept checking the time I had left thinking, “something has to happen soon. This can’t be it.”

Story
Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy. Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing - she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

Good Writing, Lackluster Twist

The narration was great and I enjoyed the writing. The head games and tension were really unsettling and I couldn’t wait for the payoff. Unfortunately, the payoff was not satisfying and slightly predictable. But it was a short and enjoyable read.

Story
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Underwhelming
Reviewed: 03-29-18
The Woman In The Window is another thriller for the audience that was swept away by Gone Girl years ago. This one falls so short. If you liked The Girl On The Train, look no further - this is a near copy of it. Damaged woman turning to booze and pills sees something she shouldn’t. People don’t believe her. Twist! Confrontation. Recovery. If I hear this narrator say “merlot” one more time I might scream.
