Publisher's summary

Best Book of 2020 by New York Times, NPR, and New York Post

"This hushed suspense tale about thwarted dreams of escape may be her best one yet.... Its own kind of masterpiece." (Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post)

"A new Tana French is always cause for celebration.... Read it once for the plot; read it again for the beauty and subtlety of French's writing." (Sarah Lyall, The New York Times)

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

"One of the greatest crime novelists writing today" (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking how to tell right from wrong in a world where neither is simple, and what we stake on that decision.

Critic reviews

“A slow-burn stunner that will keep readers turning the pages late into the night. Recommend to the author’s legions of fans, as well as those who enjoy crime fiction set in small towns like Julia Keller’s or Jane Harper’s novels.” (Library Journal, starred review)

“In another stand-alone, French again displays impressive versatility...French skillfully builds suspense...a fine thriller, but also a moving story of an unlikely friendship that grows from refinishing a ramshackle desk to rebuilding two nearly broken lives.” (Booklist)

“Deliver[s] plenty of twists, shocking revelations, and truly chilling moments.” (Kirkus)

Not up to par

I buy Tana French’s work as soon as it comes out. This was not as catchy a mystery or as interesting a search as her other mysteries. RElationships could have been more developed as well as the story line.

An instant favorite if you enjoyed Blue Bloods

I greatly enjoyed this mystery. The story hooked me in from the very beginning, but that may be because I’m Irish (the story takes place in Ireland) and was a fan of the show Blue Bloods. In fact, now that I reflect on it more, my visual image of Cal was Tom Selleck’s character in Blue Bloods.

3 vs 5

Not my favorite —the rest of her books all earn 5s for me. I didn’t connect with Cal.

Tana French is such a beautifully descriptive writ

love this book. Cal , a Chicago cop, retired to Ireland to restore a dilapidated house on a spot of land in a small village. Many interesting characters.

An Irish Pageturner

Story starts slowly, then becomes excitingly engaging with believable dialogue, tender relationships, likable characters and superb performance.

Just Grand!

A good story, well told, with a good ending. Well worth investing your time, a pleasant feeling of satisfaction your dividend.

Not the best

The ending was a little disappointing! I enjoyed the narrator's voice. I had a hard time finishing it.

Excellent Slow Burn by a Master

While this doesn’t have the pace of the Dublin Murder Squad, it has the continual ramping up of creeping concern and confusion. An American retiree in a small Irish town begins to notice more and more strangeness and forms a bond with a child who says their brother is missing. Excellent characters and dialogue. Top quality as per the usual for French.

great story and narrator

Rare to get a narrator who can do both US and Irish accents well. A bonus to the excellent story.

Nothing Very Special

Well - I made myself listen to the enire book. Not very suspenseful. Not very beiievable - and I am very good at suspending belief. WAY too syrupy. Way too many words saying nothing. Very solicitous. And seriously wants to make us like the male protagonist. Just my second Tana French and I did not like the first. So I thought I would try this one. No more for me.
