Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I found the storyline predictable and the characters one dimensional and uninspiring. The relationship between “Frankie” and “Jamie” left me annoyed.

Frustrating and Slow
Reviewed: 01-23-23
I’ve got seven hours left of this and I can’t bring myself to listen to another word. This was supposed to be about a crime. Instead it’s this completely uninspiring romance, under circumstances more incredible than the Manti Teo catfishing story. Sure, I’d love to know what ultimately happened. But I’m unwilling to slog through hour after hour, day after day of this woman’s deceitful yet dull life in order to get there. Really disappointing.

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

I loved the women characters in this book, particularly June. Rebecca Lowman the narrator was PERFECT. I could listen to her voice all day. I thought the end was disappointing - a little too relationship-focused. June was an intelligent, independent woman throughout the book. And at the most important moment in her life she’s thinking about a guy?

Katie talks just enough to be interesting and motivating, without being excessive or annoying. Pleasantly surprised at how good this turned out to be. Hopefully my race time will reflect that.

An "epoch-defining book" (The Guardian) and "this generation’s Silent Spring" (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it - the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action.
