Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An epic adventure about a female athlete perhaps past her prime, brought back to the tennis court for one last grand slam” (Elle), from the author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

“A heart-filled novel about an iconic and persevering father and daughter.”—Time

“Gorgeous. The kind of sharp, smart, potent book you have to set aside every few pages just to catch your breath. I’ll take a piece of Carrie Soto forward with me in life and be a little better for it.”—Emily Henry, author of Book Lovers and Beach Read

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, PopSugar, Glamour, Reader’s Digest

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked “the Battle-Axe” anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.

In spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

But as hard as it is, it’s an even greater honor for our team to be able to listen deeply to so many amazing stories and then highlight the best of the best to you. Fiction is a big category—one that includes everything from epic family sagas to clever short stories, from historical fiction to near-future speculative works.

Editorial Review

Sure to be an ace
If you know me, then you know I mark the start and end of my summer with the French Open and the US Open respectively—with a nice midsummer Wimbledon Pimm’s Cup to tide me over, of course. So it should come as no surprise that Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest novel, Carrie Soto Is Back, about a former tennis champion, was an automatic pre-order for me. Carrie Soto is pushing 40 and retired when she watches her Grand Slam record get broken by a young phenom. She decides to come out of retirement and reunite with her coach—who is also her father—in an attempt to reclaim her title. Set in the 90s, Carrie’s journey echoes the path of a certain other G.O.A.T. (who I hope to see claim her own Slam record in September). And it’s performed by a stellar full cast that includes cameos from legendary tennis announcers (and former players) Mary Carillo and Patrick McEnroe. I can’t wait to press play and start rooting for Carrie. — Katie O.

The B*TCH IS BACK!

TJR hits it out of the court again!
Carrie Soto had me on the edge of my seat, then my bed, from start to finish…which I did in one day! This book is for everyone who loves competition, but especially those who’ve dedicated their lives to their sport…and the parents who have nearly killed themselves to make their child’s dreams come true.

TJR fans will love the name dropping as well!

Another Delightful Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Cast, story, performance, tennis details= WONDERFUL. Loved how she created a story out of a minor character in Malibu Rising. This book was so fun to read/listen to. 100% recommend!

LOTS of Tennis

If you’re into detailed play-by-play tennis action this is the book for you. The relationships are well developed and the story is sound. I’m not a sports fan and still enjoyed the story.

Taylor does it AGAIN!

Wasn't sure I'd like this one due to Carrie Soto's less than flattering introduction in Malibu Rising. Add to it the fact that I had zero knowledge (or interest) in Tennis and I was certain I wouldn't make it past the first chapter...but as usual, Taylor Jenkins Reid pulled me in and got me hooked! I loved this book. A beautifully written story about the complexities of life and love set amid the heart racing world of professional sports. Highly recommend.

Highly recommend- Get into the head and life of an elite athlete

TJR has a rare ability to not just tell a compelling story but finds the particular jargon tone and voice of the moment and subject she writes about. I am in awe. Completely enjoyed this book beginning to end.

Halfway through and loving it

All the narrators have been great, wish my favorite, Julia Whelan, was the main reader but the story is great. About halfway through and I’m enjoying every chapter.

TJR Does It Again!

Wow. I didn’t expect to love this book. I cringed with a lot of the narration and Carrie Soto wasn’t a character that I really liked…in the beginning. But by the end of this book, I was in tears. It’s an amazing story and I loved the growth that Carrie goes through. My only regret is I can’t listen to it for the first time ever again.

Not my genre

I’m a big fan of this author. I probably shouldn’t have downloaded this book without reading what the book is about.

My husband is a big sports fan. There is always a game on in our home. If you like sports, you’ll like this book. If you roll your eyes at the thought of one more game, this is probably not the book for you.

I also found it sad that her mom just wanted her to be happy and it took 37 years before she figured how to be happy.
