Story
An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

It was difficult to comprehend how a truly innocent young man was not given fair consideration, put on death row, and executed when the true killer was ready to confess at the last minute. Loved this read!!

Liked the story, but why have distracting “soft intermittent music and other sounds” playing in the background??? It’s as though the performer needed a crutch to do her job. Did not enhance listening pleasure, distracting from a quite decent book.

Always looking for good suspenseful books. Tried to listen to this and after 11 chapters, had to call it quits and return it. I have been an Audible consumer for 10 years; there is nothing comparable. Love this app.

But every day Edie woke up to her reality: a poverty-stricken world full of alcohol and violence, where getting out seemed impossible. She taught herself to drive a stick shift truck at 12 years old so she could get her drunk daddy home from the bar. She spent Saturdays at Brushy Mountain prison visiting her incarcerated cousin. She watched adults eat while her stomach gnawed.

It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings.
